If I turned it on, it was a mistake.

Where do I turn it off?

AFAIK, you cannot turn this off. This is a change in the latest version of Lightroom Classic, to bring it inline with other apps like Photoshop, that all show transparency as this checkerboard.

If you sure you're in Lightroom (Classic)? I'don't ever see such in Lightroom.

Which application do you really use?

In Photoshop make sure that the underlying layers are visible and not hidden.

Lightroom Classic shows this now too. Try the Transform panel, then activate the crop tool to remove the parts outside the image edge.

P.S. I haven't tried it and I'm typing this on my iPad, but I assume that if you import a PNG image with transparency into Lightroom Classic, then you will see what the OP shows in his screenshot. https://www.lightroomqueen.com/whats-new-in-lightroom-2025-04/

@JohanElzenga I've tried it, but I don't got such a transparency as the thread owner described.

Did you activate the crop tool? I believe it's only when using tools like that (or anywhere in Develop). The link I posted shows it in the panorama preview window for example, but I don't think the final panorama will show the checkerboard in the grid or loupe view. The link says "In the Develop and Photo Merge dialogs, transparency now shows as a checkerboard pattern (just like in Photoshop), making it easier to identify transparent areas.", so indeed not in grid or loupe. I guess the OP was in Develop mode. I'll try it later on my Mac.

I'm on my Mac now, and indeed this is what happens. An image that has transparancy (I tried a transformed image) shows the transparent areas as checkerboard in the Develop module. There is no need to select a specific tool such as the crop tool. In Loupe view and other modules the transparent area is white as usual.

This is really obnoxious. At least in Photoshop you have the option to turn it off.

Which I do.

Why would it be expected that every user would want this when adjusting a PSD file in Develop mode?

I'm going to go back a version to avoid this.

Do as you like, but do realise that this would mean you can never update Lightroom Classic anymore... Unless Adobe makes this an option, so file a feature request in 'Ideas'.

I will file a request.

Still seems bold to add something with no option to turn off.

@JohanElzenga I can't reproduce this on my Windows machine. When I try to create a panorama I'll see the transparent areas as checkerboard in the Develop module. I can elminate thiese areas with the crop tool. As far as I can see it worked as it should.

As I say I'm on a Windows machine, perhaps it's a Mac problem.

@AxelMatt There is no problem. I never said you cannot use the crop tool to eliminate the transparent areas! I only said you will see the checkerboard pattern in the transparent areas in the crop tool (whereas in previous versions those areas would be white). Initially I thought you would only see the checkerboard pattern in certain Develop tools, that is why I mentioned activating the crop tool. Now that I had a chance to check it I can confirm you see the pattern if you are in the Develop module (and in the Photomerge dialogs).
