Can you download photos directly from your camera to Lightroom & totally bypass Apple photos to avoid having duplicate catalogues in Photos & Lightroom.

Yes, you can. Just close Photos and don't choose to import your images there.

You can also disable the auto-launch feature of Photos, but it requires opening a Terminal window and typing a command:
