Verify files in LR catalog

New Here ,

Is there a way that you can verify RAW files in the LR catalog, both in that the file exists, and that the file is not corrupt?  Does simply rebuilding the smart previews do this?  I'm looking for a report also that shows me if any files that are references in the LR catalog, are missing physically so I can either go find them or remove them from the catalog?

What is prompting this question? If the images are missing from the catalog you will see an "!" displayed on its border, and there will be a message displayed on its image in the develop module. Do you feel that you have lost some images?

There is a menu command that lets you find All Missing Photos in the Library Module. It is not a "report", it is simply a collection of photos that you can browse containing photos that Lightroom considers missing.

The only way to determine if the file is corrupt is to look at and try to use it.

The verifying missing files is something I just want to do, as in some cases, I do have some edited PSD and TIFF files that are referenced in LR, but I may have changed the folder name at some point where those are stored.

As to the corruption question, I ran across my first corrupted photo (I can't seem to open it in LR or PS or any other program that reads Nikon RAW NEF files).  The embedded JPEG preview seems to be fine as Windows Photos can display the preview, but upon opening the actual file, it is obviously corrupt (image appears as streaks of blue/pink/white bands, etc).

The reason I'm asking about verifying (for corruption in NEF files) is that if there are others that are corrupt, I want to see if I can go back and try to restore them, so I don't accidently backup over a good file, with a corrupt one.

So far, I've gone through probably a few dozen images from various shoots, and I haven't found any others, so this is just one that I found.  But short of going through each image, I'm not sure what else can be done (I have about 10k photos in my catalog).

I should add that in this particular instance, with the one corrupt file, it was actually the file, and not LR as I removed it and tried to re-add it again, and have LR build the smart preview, with the same result of a corrupted image, so it's the file itself.

Unfortunately, I had backed up over what may have been a good copy because when I went back to check my backups, I found that the backed up copy was also corrupt.  I'm sure that this isn't a common occurance and the likeliness that there are many others is not very high, but it is concerning, although I know file corruption and bit corruption are not unheard of in photography and image file handling.

If you convert your raw images to DNG, LR has a menu command (Library->Validate DNG Files) that will tell you if they have become corrupted after you did the conversion. LR does this by computing and saving a checksum of the image data and then recomputing that sum (when you run the Validate command) and comparing the recomputed sum to what was saved.

Note that this will only help if you converted to DNG before they became corrupted.
