I cannot see a reference to x64 when starting Lightroom Classic. Could it be in 32 bit even though the laptop is 64 bit?

Where are you looking for a reference, and what do you see instead?
In any case in Windows, there is no problem with running 32-bit apps in 64-bit systems. There is no benefit for most apps and they are not changed.

thought the initial screens when LR opened would say x64, but not so. See later comments.

Navigate to your Program Files folder, usually located on the compute in the C drive. You should see two folders: Program Files and Program Files (x86).
When you open one of those folders, you will see an Adobe folder. Open the Adobe folder. If you see an Adobe Lightroom folder inside the Program Files (x86) folder than you have Lightroom 32 bit installed. If you see the Adobe Lightroom folder inside the Program Files folder than you have 64 bit installed.

Update on OS Support for Next Version of Lightroom
There is no 32 bit version of Lightroom Classic. Lightroom (desktop) has been 64 bit only since Lightroom 6.
