P: Allow Common Shortcuts when using Korean

Explorer ,
Oct 12, 2023 Oct 12, 2023

When using Lightroom, shortcut keys do not work while inputting Korean.

For example, frequently used 'G', 'E', 'D', etc. do not work.

When using Lightroom, we often have to input Korean through multitasking.

Switching between Korean and English input each time is a very expensive action.

I think that if you process the shortcut keys with a standard keyboard layout, you will be able to make the shortcuts work regardless of any multi-languages.

This is a way to greatly increase the productivity of non-English Lightroom users by adding simple functions.

Please consider this as a high priority.

"shortcut keys do not work while inputting Korean. For example, frequently used 'G', 'E', 'D', etc. do not work."

When I switch my LR to run in Korean (Preferences > General > Language), the shortcuts G, E, and D all work correctly. That indicates something may be screwy in your LR installation.

Please do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running and important LR options that are set.

My only suggestion is try resetting LR's preferences:
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

LR sometimes soils its preferences file, and resetting it can fix all sorts of wonky behavior. That article explains how to restore the old preferences if resetting doesn't help.

Resetting often (but always) helps when LR's user interface is acting strangely.

Unfortunately, that's not about the preference issue.

Hmm. Are you on Mac or Windows?  Are you running Mac or Windows itself in Korean or in English?

If we're not able to reproduce the problem, I'm afraid that Adobe is very unlikely to pay much attention to the bug.

All that you're asking was already provided in my info log.

"Language setting: en-KR"

I don't know what "en-KR" means, which is why I asked. When I change the preferred language and region in Mac OS System Settings and change the language in LR Preferences, my LR's System Info only ever shows "en" or "de" or "ko", not "en-KR".

But I think I now understand what's going on (forgive me, I'm just learning how non-Western languages work with Mac OS).  When you run LR in Korean, you also select a Korean keyboard layout in System Settings, e.g. 2-Set Korean, which maps the keys on your keyboard (labeled with Western-alphabet letters) to Korean characters:

johnrellis_0-1697772103430.png

So when you type the key labeled on the keyboard as "g", Mac OS sends the character "ㅎ" to LR, not "g". LR running in Korean doesn't have any command assigned to the keyboard shortcut "ㅎ" -- it has a command assigned to "g".

(In my original testing, I was using the default US keyboard layout when running LR in Korean, which is why I didn't see any change in behavior.)

So it would be good if LR could provide easy-to-use keyboard shortcuts that work when you run LR in Korean and select a Korean keyboard layout in System Settings.  Mac OS provides five different layouts:

johnrellis_1-1697778143208.png

so LR might have to provide 5 different sets of shortcuts, one for each layout.  (I don't know the relative popularities of the layouts.)

Adobe has shown no interest in ever making LR keyboard shortcuts more flexible and customizable. While waiting for them to change LR (which they may never do), you could use the Any Shortcut plugin to reassign the standard LR shortcuts based on the Korean characters that get sent to LR.

For example, here are the reassignments I made using the 2-Set Korean characters that get sent for "g", "d", and "e":

johnrellis_2-1697778605490.png

So with 2-Set Korean selected as the keyboard layout and LR running in Korean, when I type the key labeled "d" on the keyboard, that invokes the Go To Develop command.

Thank you for your deep investigation. Maybe this issue was caused by that I use a non-Korean keyboard. I didn't have this issue when I used the Korean-native keyboard, which means produced in Korea and fully supports Korean letters. Then it's not LR version issue, but my keyboard issue. Let me test using a native Korean keyboard later. Thank you.

This is not the keyboard type issue. I found that this issue has been reported several times in Korean forums. The solution was to roll back to the previous version. Of course, this is not a feasible solution. It's like to reduce pollution we need to go back to prehistoric. The sure thing is this issue occurred from some versions of Adobe products (Photoshop, Lightroom, and Premier).

If you provide the following information, this could make it more likely that Adobe can reproduce the problem and address it.

1. A careful phone pic of your keyboard.

2. A screenshot of the Mac System Settings Language & Region, like this:

3. A screenshot of the Mac System Settings keyboard-layout settings, like this:

Also, if you don't want to roll back, as a workaround you could try the Any Shortcut plugin as describe above.

I think it doesn't matter what my keyboard is.

@johnrellis By the way, are you an employee of Adobe?

I don't want to "discuss" this issue. I just want this issue resolved by the official Adobe development team, not using a workaround or something.

"I think it doesn't matter what my keyboard is."

The specific keyboard can indeed trigger problems with LR shortcuts. For example, an AZERTY layout keyboard doesn't work in French and some other languages:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-flag-amp-color-label-shortcut-issues-specifi...

Over the years, there have been shortcut bugs with keyboard layouts for Northern European and Scandinavian languages.

"I found that this issue has been reported several times in Korean forums. The solution was to roll back to the previous version."

The issue occurs for me on older versions of LR as well, back to LR 10.4:

1. Mac OS 13.5.1.

2. LR 13.0.1, 12.0, 11.0, and 10.4.

3. A US English Mac keyboard.

4. LR's preferences > General > Language set to Korean.

5. Mac System Settings' keyboard layout set to 2-Set Korean.

Have you tried temporarily rolling back to, say, 12.0, to see if it behaves differently than 13.0.1?

If indeed this used to work on old versions of LR, there's something about those configurations that were different from what I listed above. Knowing those differences and being able to get the desired behavior in an older version of LR would turn this thread (an "Idea") into a bug report tracked internally by the product team. But Adobe would need to be able to reproduce the good behavior in the older version, so they could narrow down the cause.

But as it stands, it looks like the keyboard shortcuts when running LR in Korean are operating the same way since LR first supported Korean. If so, then Adobe will treat the issue as an "Idea" for future improvement, which, in my opinion, is much less likely to get any attention from Adobe unless many Korean users express their opinion this thread and upvote it.

But whether Adobe treats this as a "Bug" or "Idea", unless many more people upvote it, you'll likely be waiting a very long time for Adobe to do anything about (my opinion based on many years contributing here).  Which is why I suggested a workaround.

"By the way, are you an employee of Adobe? I don't want to "discuss" this issue. I just want this issue resolved by the official Adobe development team, not using a workaround or something."

I understand. But developers very rarely participate in this forum, and the best way to get the attention of developers is by submitting a bug report here that allows the developers to easily reproduce the bad behavior and the previous (good) behavior.  With the information provided so far about past versions of LR, there's no change from past behavior that would be evidence of a recently introduced bug.

I don't work for Adobe. But I am responsible for a large fraction of the public bug reports here, either directly submitted by me or with contributions from me to clearly demonstrate how to reproduce the problem:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/forums/searchpage/tab/message?sort_by=-topicPostDate&filter=location,...

I also know more about how LR implements shortcuts in the 16 supported languages than anyone else in this forum and almost certainly more than anyone you're likely to talk with if you contact Adobe Support. I implemented the Any Shortcut plugin, and here are the couple dozen bug reports about shortcuts I've submitted:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/forums/searchpage/tab/message?filter=location,authorId&q=shortcut&noS...

You could try contacting Adobe Support, but generally, based on what many people report here, unless you have a very elementary issue, it's more often a waste of your time. But who knows, maybe you'll get lucky and talk to a Korean support person who can immediately help based on their direct knowledge of how best to run LR in Korean.
