Suggesting one answer!  To add a border requires that a JPG is exported.

JPG files are heavily compressed.  3MP is possible with a JPG even if it still has full Pixel dimensions as original.

No, if you set to output maximum available size you will get a 26 megapixel jpg from a 26 megapixel sensor, this 3 mp images are scaled down in dimensions....

First, let's clarify if you are talking mp - megapixels or mb - megabytes?

Yes, there is inconsistency in output sizes when adding a border. I can see no setting that determines size for exports with a border and border with seems to affect size also... I will query the team ...

To clarify... when exporting with a border there are no size options available. Size options are only under 'ExportAs' as far as I can find.

The OP is correct in that the size is reduced and I can't figure out how as exports seem to end up with differing Mega Pixels.. Borders are only saved as jpegs but pixels are reduced regardless of compression.

I say a feature request is in order to be able to set size in pixels when exporting with border.

you will notice on these screen shots that Apple Photos info shows MP

Yes- megapixels or megabytes?

A JPG will always be smaller in MegaBytes even if the same MegaPixels. JPGs are always 'Compressed'.

Example-

Original raw NEF file-  24.2MegaPixels  26.78 MegaBytes.

Full-size JPG Export-  24.2MegaPixels  7.42 MegaBytes.

Did i not write MP, that usually means megapixels right?? I am ofcourse fully aware exactely what a jpg and a raw file is... but there are share settings in LR that let me decide to output a JPG with MAXIMUM FILE SETTINGS. So if the sensor is 26 megapixels then the output should be 26 megapixels, this works just fine in LR but NOT when choosing share with border.

I am now aware of your iPad problem and sorry for my unhelpful replies-

The Lightroom Queen in her book "Edit Like a Pro"- has this to say:

On iOS, if you tap on the Share menu from Detail view, there may be an option called something like Add border and share. This is a test feature, so the exact details aren’t finalized yet.

It’s a very simple export that saves a JPEG with 2048px along the longest edge, adds a border in the color and shape of your choice, and then displays the iOS Share sheet so you can save the photo to the camera roll or send it to someone.

It seems you will need to Export a Full-size file first, then use another App (eg. Photoshop) to add the Border.
