This new stuff should have a switch and be optional. I can’t find a way to turn it off. It clutters my home page with material I don’t want.

It's not my favourite thing either, but you can just select the Album icon instead (and that selection should stick).
You can add a feature request to remove at this site (monitored by the engineers):
