Hi Jo,
Thanks for reaching out. We understand your concern and are here to help.
What is the Lightroom and macOS version you are using? How are you importing the RAW files? Does only a set of pictures get converted to JPEGs or all the CR3 files? Are you directly importing the images from the camera or through a card reader?
Check this article on import preferences: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/file-import-formats-settings.html
Let us know if this helps.
Regards,
Ranjisha

Hi Ranjisha,
Thank you for your reply.
I was trying to call adobe support but line was so bad that I couldn't hear anything. How can I speak to someone from the support?
I'm using Creative Cloud Photography plan with 1TB I have lightroom and lightroom classic intalled and I can see on my account it is up to date.
Please see below Mac I'm using:
| 24-inch Purple iMac with 4.5K Retina display |
With the following configuration: Apple M1 chip with 8-core CPU with 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores, 8-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine NEURAL ENGINE 065-C9GM 16-core Neural Engine 16GB unified memory Gigabit Ethernet I imported my RAW files by using card reader to my photo folder and then I was trying to import photos from the folder to Lightroom but that doesn't work. They has been uploaded as JPGs for some reason. All of them are imported as JPGs. I used this equipment a few months ago and didn't have any problems. I downloaded yesterday plugin 12.4 as advised but that didn''t change anything. Could you kindly let me know what i can do? I need to process my photos asap. thank you! Jo |

What app are you using to copy the images from the memory card to your photo folder?
Have you checked your camera to make sure you haven't inadvertently set it to shoot Jpeg instead of Raw?
A screenshot of the of the photo folder showing the images that you are trying to import world be helpful.

Dear Jim,
Thank you so much for your reply. I really apprecaite it!
I plugged in my card reader and then opened folders on the card and then selected all and copy and paste to the folder in mac photo apps - so i copied it directly. In that folder they are saved in RAW but when import them to the Lightroom they are in JPGs.
Thank you so much! I will send screendshot in the evening after work.

Do you have the Mac Photos App opening or running?
If so this App is importing and 'hiding' the RAW files and only allowing Lightroom to show/add/import the JPG previews that the Photos App creates.

How can I import RAWs then? Have you got any sugggestions please?
Shall I try to copy it directly from card to a desktop folder and import them from there?
thank you again!

This quote comes from a reply from Conrad Chavez
Because it is a macOS package and not a folder, it is designed to not be openable by double-clicking, and not accessible from another application’s import/open dialog box. This is because the contents inside are all managed by Apple Photos, which is tracking everything in there with its database.
PHOTOS APP LOCKS IMAGE FILES- Best Explanation
And read Post#2 from Cletus Lee in this link-
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/community/threads/where-to-store-photos-newbie.42034/
If you want to continue using BOTH Lightroom and the Mac Photos App- you will need to learn about the workarounds. ('Exporting' RAW originals out of the Photos package.)

Jo, trying to manage Raw images in two separate image editors is generally a recipe for disaster. So basically you need to decide which of Apple Photos or Lightroom (either Classic or the Lightroom Desktop app) that you wish to be your raw editor. Once you have decided, import your raw files directly from the card into that app and do not attempt to then import them again into the other.
Given that you are paying Adobe the regular subscription fees, one assumes that Lightroom would be your preferred raw editor. In which case import into Lightroom, process the raw files there, then if you want to use Apple Photos for sharing you would export Jpegs from Lightroom which you could then add to Apple Photos.

It really depends on what files you are proposing to delete. If you mean the low-res Jpegs that you imported from Apple Photos, then yes I would advise deleting them (do that from within Lightroom to keep the catalog updated).
I assume you are using Lightroom Classic for importing, yes? Not the cloud-centric Lightroom desktop app?
In terms of importing from the memory card, many people (such as myself) always import directly into Lightroom Classic. That's so easy to do if you use one of the standard date-based folder schemes, as Lightroom Classic can automatically create the new sub-folders based on the capture date of the imports then copy the images from the card into the correct sub-folders. However, many users prefer not to use the date-based folder scheme and instead prefer to organise their imports into manually-created folders based on their own criteria. So typically those users may "import" by first copying the contents of their memory cards outside Lightroom Classic into the correct folders first, then do an "Add" import into Lightroom Classic.
There are other ways of importing as well, but the important thing is to decide which app you will import hyour raw files into, then decide how to do those imports.
