Red Blocks Appearing in Images

New Here ,
Nov 12, 2018 Nov 12, 2018

Ever since updating to the latest Lightroom CC release on iOS and macOS (v2.0.2), random red square glitches are being embedded into my photos. There is no rhyme or reason, and it occurs on both the desktop and mobile apps.

Sometimes the glitches appear during editing and other times an otherwise unaffected image will have the glitches embedded upon saving (exporting).

Here is a screenshot of an exported photo that does NOT display the glitch in Lightroom CC, but has the glitch embedded in the image after saving the file:

Is anyone else experiencing this issue? The only mention is with someone on Lightroom Classic CC here: Seemingly random red blocks appear on images exported through Lightroom

It's occurring for me on my iMac Pro, the 2018 iPad Pro, iPhone XS Max, and the 2018 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, and is most definitely not device specific.

Has this image been edited in Photoshop by any chance? See here: Image edited in Photoshop and saved, imported to Lightroom but now includes discolored rectangles

No, these red blocks just randomly appear when using Lightroom CC on desktop and mobile. Every single image has to be examined for these red artifacts, which are added to the majority of saved images. And every time an image is re-saved, or even opened in Photoshop, the red glitches appear in a different position and are differently sized.

But do they only appear on files that have gone through photoshop (your answer seems to indicate so and then it might be the photoshop bug referenced above)? Do they ever appear on raw images that have never gone through photoshop?

The red blocks appear within Lightroom itself, as well as on images saved to a final destination like Apple Photos (iOS) or Finder (macOS).

And when not present on an image in Lightroom, the red artificats appear in different positions each time the image is saved.

Only after posting this thread did I discover that they also appear when sending images to Photoshop to edit.

This bug is exclusive to Lightroom CC on iOS and macOS, and these artifacts do NOT appear on the photos prior to being imported into Lightroom on any device.

Weird. I have not seen this on any of my iOS or Mac OS X devices. I would submit a bug to https://feedback.photoshop.com . There are actual Lightroom engineers that check those. This forum is just fellow users and a few customer service reps so nobody with any real clout to check out bugs.

Yeah probably a real bug. I wonder why it only shows up on some machines.

I have the same issue on my end. Have seen them appear randomly as I work in Lightroom looking at RAW images and after exporting them from Lightroom. Some with, some without going through Photoshop. I work on a PC with Windows 10.

Adobe are aware of this and are planning a fix according to this thread.... Color artifacts in Lightroom CC for iPad

(Ignacio also mentions a temporary fix on that thread.... change a setting - e.g. toggle Optics/Lens corrections for the image)

I've been getting these, too. But in my case I have found that if I zoom in on the image (in Lightroom) and zoom back out, it disappears. Strange.

The latest update should have fixed this (hopefully). Is anyone still seeing it?

Hi, I have version 2.1.1 on my Imac and I still see ugly artefacts, especially in blue skies (no red blocks, however). The raw-file is perfect and uploaded full size to the Adobe cloud. Toggling optic corrections does not help, nor zooming. The photo was not editedbin Photoshop.

Here is an example:

1) This is the raw file, exported to jpg from Lightroom Classic:

2) This is the file (zoomed in) in Lightroom CC with the block artefacts:

3) Here is a zoomed part of the photo as showed in Lightroom CC:

Happy New Year!

Those look like jpeg compression artifacts. The raw engine is probably using the smart preview instead of the full raw file.

Thank you. Yes, probably. in that case the smart preview is not smart enough... I wonder if there’s away to download a better image. I can’t find it in the preferences.

It should automatically download the full raw file when you zoom in but

that sometimes can take a while. You can also place the image in an album

that you set to store copies locally on.

Thank you, Jao. I’ll give it a try. In the meantime I have exported the pictures I needed to jpg in LR Classic and synchronized those via the cloud. The results are excellent, both in LR CC and in LR Mobile.

Anyhow, my problem looks different from the coloured rectangle issue... Thanks for your help!

I've been noticing the same problem, and it's a real puzzle. I've found it on my own files, and photos taken by two clients and my brother-in-law, so it's not particular to me. Some of the rectangles disappear when the photos are refreshed on screen, but some are permanent. All were taken with different cameras, most with iPhone, but one was taken with a Nikon, I think. I'm viewing them both on the phone screen and on my large monitor using Bridge. I've made a sheet of screen shots of the problem that I'll upload with this post. Mysterious-rectangles.jpg
