P: Lightroom Classic>Edit in PS: Long Delay+Erroneous Error Message opening Ps Beta 2024 25.0

I just recently updated Photoshop Beta to 2024 v25.0 on my Windows 11 machine.

Now when I try to open photos from LR 12.4 using the "edit in...", it hangs up for a time and then comes up saying "The file could not be edited because Adobe Photoshop 2024 could not be launched."

When I hit "Ok" it then opens the file in Photoshop 2024.

This happens with every file, even if Photoshop 2024 is already up and running at the time.

This does not happen with 2023 v24.7.

Greetings all,

Lightroom Classic 12.5 released this evening.  If used in conjunction with PS Beta 25.0 or later, this erroneous error message plus long open wait time should be mitigated. Please install LrC 12.5 and make certain that your Beta is up to date.

If you do not see the update in your Creative Cloud Application, you can refresh it by hitting [Ctrl/Cmd]+[Alt/Opt]+[ R ].

Note: It may take up to 24 hours for your update to be available in your Creative Cloud app.

Thanks RichPolk, I hadn't thought about addressing the problem this way via export, but it works for me.

Much appreciated.

Dear Mr Moneypants. You write something right..."it's a beta" but maybe you forget that we pay for this beta also, as we pay for lightroom, as we pay for photoshop. We are not talking about wrong exporting from third part software, we are talking about an Adobe software that no more function with another Adobe software, after they did something (wrong).

Downgrading Ps beta was not a perfect solution but it worked. Now Adobe delete generative fill from the old version (why?!?!?) so everyone have no more solution and that is.

What you pay for is the finished product. And that is not the Beta. That you install the Beta and want to use (read test) new features is completely voluntary. But be awere that there can be bugs.

Well now the generative stuff has stopped working on 24.7 so there is no choice than to update without being able to open in layers

Thanks for the workaround. For me it works partly, since it reproduces the error I posted here:
"Edit in Photoshop" setting not working properly

I have made two export presets. One for the productive version and one for the beta verwion. Both open up the PS version that is open in the background (if there's one) or the last version that I had opened manually. Here's a screenshot of the export preset settings:

Photo sent from LRc 12.4 to PS 24.7 not opening after latest update to both LRc and PS Apple Silicon. PS updated camera raw 15.  Massively frustrating.  Won't open any RAW, jpg or tiff file from LRc on PS or PS (beta) latest update.  Reloading both PS and LRc doest fix.  Updating has broken both my Apple Studio with M1 max and my MBP with M1 Max. Both running Venture13.4.1 (c).  When attempt to send RAW file to PS from LRc no longer get the copy with LR edits dialogue, PS or PS beta open to the home screen and does noting.  No photo in single or multiple layers (for multiple photos to stack or blend for composite).  I can open from PS for files on my local drive or my Adobe Cloud just fine but can no longer round trip from LRc!

I think this is a technical problem and reported as such but no response that I can find.

A previously existing feature such as opening from Lightroom into photoshop
should work even in a beta version. Beta testing should be for new
features. It would make sense for the generative fill to be buggy in the
beta version. Totally understandable. It’s a new feature. Opening from
Lightroom into photoshop is an OLD feature and therefor should not be buggy
even in a beta version of a software release. The beta version should never
have been released with this bug. It’s sloppy programming and sloppy
testing. There is such thing as an alpha version of a program. This is an
alpha type of bug that should’ve been noticed and taken care of before a
beta release. A beta release is to test new features. If you break other
components that make testing the new features virtually impossible, your
beta testing is kinda useless. What’s going on here is absolutely not
normal software engineering procedure. Don’t give them a pass because it’s
beta. They 100% put out a program with alpha problems. --
Thank you!

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post if it helps you get responses.

Sorry, but as of Aug 15, the workaround described by CoryShubert does not work any longer. Up to today, I used Lightroom 12.4 together with Photoshop beta 24.7. Today (Aug 15) PS beta 24.7 reported that I must upgrade to beta 25.0 if I wanted to use the new PS generation tool. I installed the upgrade, but now the file handshake between LR 12.4 and PS beta 25.0 does not work as before, i.e. a TIF-file is not generated by LR and consequently does not open in PS. Please fix this asap.

Hi All,

First time poster. I've been dealing with issues opening images from LRC (v 12.4) in Photoshop Beta (v 25.0)

I'm met with a string of error messages ranging form "files cannot be editied, PS Beta cannot be launched, so various files are damaged yadda ya. Upon the recommendation from this forum, I downgraded PS Beta to version 24.7 which worked for a while, until I staretd receiving error messages yesterday indicating PS Beta features like generative fill were only available in the newest updated version. So I updated again... same issue.

Will there be a bug fix sometime soon for this? Is there another workaround I'm missing in the meantime?

Thanks,

Brooke

So, I am having all the same issues as others, but something I am seeing does not seem to match others.

I have both versions of Photoshop installed (regular and Beta)

When I go to Lightroom to specify which version of Photoshop I want to handle external Photoshop editing, there is always just one option. I cant choose between Photoshop or the Beta version.

I would totally be willing to send layers to the regular version of Photoshop and only use the Beta for Generative fill, but I cant seem to specify that at all.

Adove has not fixed the big bug in  Photoshop Beta version 25 until today

I find it highly ridicoulous to suggest to install a faulty version and disconnect the user who does not update of the GenAI

Selecting Edit In from Lightroom and then selecting the Photoshop Beta on.a Mac M2 Pro rarely loads the selected file in Photoshop.  You have to load it in Photoshop with the Open command.  It opens Photoshop but doesn't open the selected file.

UPDATE!!!!!!

Here is a work around for everyone who is still having issues that has worked for me. Install the update for V.25 of photoshop beta, but then go and reinstall Lightroom Classic version 12.2.1

Thats the issue and I hope they get it fixed soon, but that is a definitely solid workaround for the time being.

A temporary fix for Photoshop beta v 25 for Windows.

To set this up so both apps work in Adobe Lightroom preferences select as your second open as in preference go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2023\ and select Photoshop.EXE.

  1. To edit a file right click and select edit in then click Photoshop.exe then click with Edit a copy with LR adjustments.
  2. Close PS and it will save the file to Lightroom (my settings are set to save as a tiff file). You must close PS 2023.
  3. Go to edit in again and click Photoshop 2024 (first choice for open in is the beta version) then chose Edit original. You can now use beta 2025 to edit in. Do your work and close.
  4. Go back to Lightroom and if you see a window saying that it could not open the file go to File Explorer and find the tiff file that you just saved and move it to a new location or rename it. If you do not Photoshop beta will overwrite it and remove your edits.
  5. If necessary, you can right click and synchronize the folders to get your file back in Lightroom and continue editing in Lightroom beta which now recognizes that file and will open it. Opening as layers does not work. Selecting more than one wile to open works.

We volunteer to let Adobe know what does and does not work on thousands of different computers. Our reports aid the engineers in fixing issues. Only those willing to risk things not working as expected should participate. People who rely on LR & PS for work should not risk beta testing.

I'm having a siniliar issue on an iMac and I need help. I updated to version 25 beta, it will not open when I click edit in photoshop beta from Lightroom.
It's set up for external editing in beta, and will open but nothing moves over. Then I went back to the older version before the 25 update and it was working fine until last night. Now everytime I use generative fill, it says I need to update to the new version. I uninstalled photoshop and beta many times now and still isn't working

More than 2 weeks later and this major bug still has not been patched? I'm having a hard time believing that the fix would really be that complicated considering that this same bug has happened a dozen or more times over the past few years.
Is everything OK over at Adobe?

A quick workaround can be to export in Lightroom the appropriate picture as a .psd-file and then open this file manually in PS 2025

My System: Intel i7-8700K - 64GB RAM - NVidia Geforce RTX 3060 - Windows 11 Pro 23H2 -- LR-Classic 14 - Photoshop 26 - Nik Collection 7 - PureRAW 4 - Topaz PhotoAI 3
