Adventure beyond borders with Generative Expand in Photoshop (beta)
Generative Expand is a new frictionless workflow dedicated to expanding images beyond their original bounds. Powered by the same Firefly-based technology as Generative Fill, Generative Expand enables users to seamlessly expand and resize any image by clicking and dragging with the Crop tool, expanding the canvas. After clicking “Generate” the new canvas is filled with AI-generated content that naturally blends with the existing image. This streamlined workflow enables users to create and ideate in Photoshop with Generative AI more quickly and intuitively than before. Use Generative Expand in a multitude of ways:

Extend images: Expand the canvas of your image with or without a prompt to create a seamless extension of your scene.
Aspect Ratio Extend: Make that horizontal image magazine-cover dimensions!
Crop & Expand: You can get the exact composition you want by cropping in one direction while expanding in another – all in the same simple workflow.
Multiple Expansions:  Go big! Push the boundaries by using the Generative Expand repeatedly go beyond the expected.
Rotate & Expand:  Don’t lose a pixel when you Rotate the image in the Crop tool, fill the extended areas using Generative Expand.

How to use Generative Expand

Select the Crop tool from the toolbar.
Set the Fill to Generative Expand in the Options bar.
Drag the corner and side handles to the desired dimensions.
In the Contextual Task Bar, click “Generative Expand” Button.
Crop & Expand
Add a text prompt or leave the field blank, then click “Generate”.
Choose the variations from the Contextual Task Bar arrows, or use the thumbnail previews in the Properties Panel.
Rate the results!
Give each variation a thumbs up or thumbs down in the task bar or in the Properties panel, then follow the link to tell us more. Prompts may also unintentionally generate problematic or offensive images; in such cases you can use the Report Result option to let us know.

it is a great tool valuable for the time.... but i am unable to get this Options Expand...

No idea... also one language is missing under Adobe "URDU" i belive its not difficult for Adobe to place URDU Language in the Adobe Suits... Thanks

Hi Cory Schubert, I am a swimsuit and boudoir photographer and often want to remove objects in the background. These are sometimes far from the person. Almost every other time I use Generative Fill I get the dreadfull message that something is not following the rules. I submitted multiple feedbacks and nothing has changed! My photo’s are not of nude people and I don’t want to create that. See screenshot please!

Hi Korneel, have you tried using content aware fill instead? I'm no technical expert but I believe this uses the existing image/pixel data to remove items. In my own experience, it's quite good on similar patterns and it may work in this case. I believe Generative fill is quite highly safeguarded and given the nature of your photography, it's judging your image to be explicit. Perhaps you could create a mask of the area you are trying to generative fill and separating this section from the overall image, so the AI only evaluates this area?

What happened? This looks like the worst version to me.
Now 90% of the time I use Generative Ai, it doesn't work. I will have to downgrade if possible.
- Every time now it's Something Wrong Error 408 or 406.
- Service is not responding, check internet
- Any details to remove(blanck prompt) - images violate user guidelines.

On the latest version 25.0.0 I couldn't get generative fill to work correctly. Gave me error (408) or "service unavailable - check your internet connection). Reverted to version 24.7 and it works perfectly.

BUG: Generative Expand creates unwanted artifacts along residual crop lines.

When generative expand 'was' wrking for me, it was adding the residual crop lines.

Now, the generative expand just does not work anymore. Now everytime I try, I recieve a prompt instructing me to "to use this feature, first drag the canvas to expand."

Ive tried this out, but its not really interactive like other AI, it doesnt learn or adapt for example.... with Chat GPT I can get it to write code or generate content, then I can offer it feedback on what it provides ...it takes that an applies it to the current work it has provided, This in photoshop does not. I get the impression it doesnt even gernerate anything and it merely looks for something simlar and inserts it.. very obviously also, no account is taken into the join or where the image meet, even when I mask and fade the forground image I want to expand it looks ridiculous, I will attach the work.

For this I promted... "more of the same blue sky", it found several iamges I assume are stock images as none were close to the current sky. I then tried things like... "Use the clouds" or "Add sun" but none of applied to the current selections, it just started fresh everytime, it looked like it was just trying other stock images, so it doesnt learn... therefore its not Intelligent... so I'm usnsure if this should even be referrred to as AI! I will find another stock image and blend these myself, this was a VERY simple task , it it was just a waste of my time, not a time saver.

Generative Expand was working very well on my M1 Mac but now with release 25.0.0 there expanded areas are just slightly out of alignment and do not blend with the original areas. Please fix ASAP.. Thanks!

I'm a boudoir photographer and boy PSBeta sure doen't like a little skin! I am trying to straighten an image which requries expanding the background. I was able to crop the image but any time I have a bit that would need to be filled in, generative expand starts automatically and then I am told the image violates user guidelines. (It's a guys bare back and he's wearing black briefs.) Is there a way to turn this off so I can do it manually?

Reporting the following issues with Generative Expand:

* This latest version as of August 27th , after using crop tool to desired dimensions the Generative Expand start to show progress bar, but at the ends nothing happens, this behavior is constant, with sporadic times when it actually works.

* When I get it to work, the alignment of the generated areas is grossly misaligned, unusable in some instances

I keep my Adobe apps always updated and current, I understand this is Beta, and this is my feedback and help. I appreciate the amazing tools you are providing with the AI technology. As a final note, there was a prior version of Generative Expand that was working almost perfect, with generated areas amazingly matching and well aligned, still had the occasional no generated crop at all, but it did work most of the time, but with the latest update, was an step back. After updating Photoshop Beta to version 25.1, the generative fill works very poorly. It takes more than 5 minutes before an image is generated (or nothing is generated at all). Additionally, there's a feeling that the AI doesn't understand anything. When prompted with 'black door,' it generates white or red. Such issues were not present in version 24.7.

I have a question, the generative expand, understood is lagging for you, and my question is, how is the edge matching on generated fills? Because V. 25 does mire if a tiled type of fill on generated areas, not thing to do with prior version which did a great job, albeit in low res... Txs
