Steps to Reproduce:

Create or open a document with an existing layer mask
Select the gradient tool
Attempt to apply gradient to the layer mask

Expected Result: Gradient should apply smoothly to the layer mask

Actual Result: System displays error message: "Could not complete your request because of a program error"

Additional Notes:

Error occurs on multiple (all unrelated) files
Error persists after application restart and system reboot
Issue is consistently reproducible

Having the same problem and have rolled back to v26.0.

My specific problem was, a layer with an image, above that a color fill layer, and above that another color fill layer. Both color fill layers set to "color", and both clipped to the image layer.

I wanted to apply a gradient to the mask in the uppermost (orange) color fill layer. Version 26.0 allows me to do that, but version 26.1 and 26.2 come back with "can't complete because of a program error".

However, 26.2 does allow me to apply a gradient to the mask in the lower (blue) color fill layer. Seems like the problem is something to do with more than one layer stacked on top of another.

Hi Cory,

Thank you for your response. I wanted to provide some additional information about this issue.

After I reported the issue, I switched over to Photoshop (standard not beta), and the issue continued intermittently, suggesting it's not preferences-related. However, I've noticed a potential trigger pattern: the error seems to occur when copying layers with gradient-applied layer masks between documents, or when working on layers with gradient-applied layer masks which have been copied in from other documents at an earlier point.

While testing the preferences reset this morning, Photoshop crashed completely when I worked on a layer mask using the gradient tool (it was working correctly at this point), and then attempted to copy a layer with a gradient-applied layer mask from another document. I can provide the crash report from this morning's incident if that would be helpful, in the meantime I'll paste my System Info from PS Beta below.

Hi @ModernAlchemy, testing here and we are not seeing an issue.

Try resetting Prefs for the Beta:
/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/ Photoshop Beta Settings (Mac Ventura)
/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/Adobe\ Photoshop\ \(Beta\)\ Settings (Mac)

Launch BETA Photoshop While Pressing The Keyboard Shortcut
With Photoshop closed, press and hold Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Shift+Command+Option (Mac) on your keyboard and then Launch Photoshop the way you normally would.
