Problem suddenly came up today, the Remove tool is unusably slow. Worked normally previously. There was no update.

Try resetting Prefs for the Beta:
/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/Adobe\ Photoshop\ \(Beta\)\ Settings
With Photoshop closed, press and hold Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Shift+Command+Option (Mac) on your keyboard and then Launch Photoshop the way you normally would.

Thanks for replying. Same result with reset preferences.
Here is a movie:

Nothing special about this file, in fact this was working normally yesterday with this and similar files.

had been experiencing this for awhile, remove tool would work fine some days, extremely laggy others—couldn't figure out what I was doing different until just now.... remove tool doesn't like working on a layer with transparency. As soon as I put a fill layer below my layer with transparency, speed is back to normal. Not sure if this is the issue in all cases, but fixed it for me.

Hi, silly question, but how do I do this? Fill layer?

I have the same issue and can't create a layer that helps

Not sure if you still need this answer, but you can just use the paint bucket to fill a completely empty layer, or the adjustment layer button (half-filled circle next to the group (folder) button at the bottom of the layers window) has a 'solid color' option at the very top of its menu. This is the 'fill layer'.

Thanks Jennifer, this workaround actually did the trick for me and it's much faster.
Typical Adobe mod/bot reply above "just reset the preferences" instead of actually trying to help.

You're welcome, to speed it up even more turn on "Sample all layers"

I've not fixed the issue but found a work around that has sped up my process - maybe it will work for you too!
This screen grab is from my 'remove tool settings'.
I unchecked the 'Remove after each stroke' box which then allows me to select multiple objects/areas to remove. Once you have a selection, click on the arrow and it should fix them all up individually.
Not an ideal work around but works for my workflow, hopefully it should speed up yours too!
