I'm incline to agree with what Kevin is aluding to.  Recent Photoshop versions are definitely getting intolerant of older hardware.  I bit the bullet and replaced my seven year old system a while back because it was shutting down when I tried to use Neural Filters and other new features.  Everything works fine now.

 

If this turns out to be the case, it is easy to roll back to a version that is stable on your computer.
