Camera RAW filter in PS 24.7 treats RGB layers as monochrome

Using the camera raw filter on a simple 3 layer RGB document gives unexpected results.

To reproduce:

1. Create a small document, RGB 8 bit, sRGB profile, white background layer.

2. Add two empty layers.

3. Leave background white. Use brush to paint a small area of Layer 1 red, and a small area of Layer 2 black.

4. Select each layer in turn and open the Camera Raw Filter.

Expected: each layer is treated as an RGB color layer because the parent document is RGB.

Actual: Layer 1 (red) is treated as color. Background and Layer 2 are treated as monochrome.

I have this problem, but only after I downloaded CR 14.5 and installed it, as Adobe replaced my original CR in PS v22.5.7 without asking or notifying me with the new version, which seemed to split functions into smaller groups. Auto-update is Off. I need to be able to reprint files that nothing will be changed simply because Adobe decided to replace a component within PS. I don't know with certainty that my older files which have utilized CR filter are going to remain stable. Does anyone have any ideas about reverting to the software set that was in 22.5.7? Much appreciated.

Apparently this is by design. The standard production version does this too.

Any true monochrome (R=G=B) layer gets the "monochrome" profile applied in the ACR filter. Change one single value, however, like setting a Levels white point at 254 in one channel - and it opens with the "color" profile applied.

As monochrome in the ACR filter, most color controls are disabled - but curiously, you can still adjust individual Curves, as well as Color Grading.

Yeah, it's a bit odd - but if you need to color adjust a monochrome layer, maybe the ACR filter wouldn't be the first choice anyway. There are better tools.

In my opinion, if this is by design, then it's a bad design. In a production mode, why should anyone be forced to perform extra steps when the previous version worked well? This, to me, is clearly a bug or missed code. It makes no logical sense to remove functionality or require an illogical and non-intuitive action to be taken. ACR has recognized the color mode of files without difficulty since I can remember. I have recovered (somehow, without Adobe's help) the previous version of ACR that has worked for years in my version of PS. And I intend to keep it that way.

The other major issue for me is that I didn't ask for ACR to be updated. I don't have auto-update activated, and this is an example of why I choose to avoid auto updates. The stable functioning of each component in PS when updating had been Adobe's primary concern in years past. A production workflow demands this approach even though workflows have evolved and matured.
