Imported Photoshop brushes not working - paints lots of lines, no brush mark

Hi there,

I'm experiencing issues in Photosop 25.11 when importing 3rd party brushes. I ordered some ink/watercolor chinese style brushes. When I try to paint with them, it's creating a lot of horizontal lines. It does not resemble the inky expected brush mark.

I've tried updating my Mac OS, re-setting my tool presets, the problem still persists. My existing adobe brushes work fine. The display image of the brush also looks a little off compared to my other brushes that work fine.

In the screenshot the white is painted with my existing adobe brushes, and look as expected. The black marks that look funky are the new brushes. I feel like this is a glitch or I am missing a simple setting fix. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!

Update: I've adjusted spacing to fix the line issue and played around with the pen/tilt presets. It's strange that these settings were not enabled - is there a fix for brushes that do not import with their brush preset settings?
Also, while the brush mark looks better in shape, it's missing the tonality and texture. They look dark and flat. I expect them to be darker on one edge and lighter on the other and have more transparency, like a natural ink look. Is there a setting that brings these natural characteristics back?

Hi @Tiiu22946921dq70,

Thank you for reaching out and providing such a detailed description of the issue. It sounds like the imported brushes may not have brought over their original settings, which can sometimes happen with third-party brushes, especially if they are customized for specific effects.

Since you’ve already tried adjusting the spacing and pen/tilt settings, I’d suggest looking into a few additional options to help achieve that natural, inky effect:

1. In Brush Settings, ensure opacity and flow jitter are set to “Pen Pressure” (if you’re using a tablet). This can add the tonality and texture variations you’re looking for.

2. Try enabling “Shape Dynamics” in the Brush Settings. Adjust the “Angle Jitter” and “Size Jitter” with “Pen Tilt” or “Pen Pressure” to get a more organic look, similar to natural ink strokes.

3. Dual brush can create a layered brush effect that may mimic the texture and tonality of ink. Set it to combine with your main brush for more depth in each stroke.

4. Sometimes, re-importing the brushes as a standard .ABR file (if available) ensures that all preset settings come through correctly.

If the brushes still don’t display the inky, textured effect you’re after, it may be a limitation of the brush file itself. Feel free to share any other details, and we’ll be happy to help troubleshoot further!

Best,

Anshul Saini
