Half my layers are missing in the layers window, but their content on the canvas are still showing. What's going on here? This is driving nuts.

Well, after eating some organic almonds and quitting Photoshop and returning, the layers are back.  Go figure!

So the problem is solved? Layers appeared magically without restarting the app?

Yes, it is resolved, by simply restarting the app.

Restarting seems like "lazy advice", but here's what it does:

Key points about restarting software:
  • Memory clearing:
The primary benefit is that restarting frees up RAM by closing all active applications and clearing temporary data, allowing the software to run more efficiently.

  • Resolving conflicts:
If different parts of a program are interfering with each other due to unexpected interactions, a restart can often reset these conflicts.

  • Applying updates:
Sometimes, software updates require a restart to fully take effect.

  • Troubleshooting first step:
Restarting is often the first troubleshooting step to try when encountering issues with a program.
