P: Color Distortion When Opening Images saved from Facebook in Photoshop 26.5

Community Beginner ,
Mar 28, 2025 Mar 28, 2025

After updating to the latest version of Photoshop, we encountered an issue where images saved from Facebook from the previous year display color distortions when opened in the program. However, images saved recently from Facebook open without any issues and display correctly.

Hi all! Special thanks to our expert @Andrew Yoole and all others who provided sample images. The team is investigating this. In the meantime, you can use Camera Raw to render the images while opening them in Photoshop.

Go to Photoshop(macOS)/Edit (Win) > Settings/Preferences > Camera Raw > File Handling > Set JPEG to 'Automatically Open all Support JPEGs'

Thanks!

I have an image that i am trying to touch up and crop in Photoshop. I have attached that image below. I have also attached a copy of what it looks like right after I import it into Photoshop without any modifications. Any help to fix this is appreciated.

Your file has minor data structure corruption. Here is the converted version

Known issue with jpegs specifically downloaded from facebook.

It's unclear whether the problem is Photoshop or facebook, but Camera Raw will open these files correctly. So set Camera Raw to open all jpegs (in settings), and from there open into Photoshop.

On Mac another option (not a faster one, though) would be opening the image in Preview (a default Mac image viewing application) and exporting a tif from there.

I never had this problem before but when I open this picture in Photoshop its corrupted but when I open it in picture viewer on my computer it loads fine.  I redownloaded it and I still have the same problem.  Photoshop has been updated with the latest update.

Here is the solution!

1. Open Paint app using Windows search

2. When Paint opens, press Ctrl + O

3. Select the picture --> Open

4. The picture will be opened. Now File --> Save as --> JPEG Picture

5. Save the picture and reopen it in Photoshop. Its fixed now.

Cheers!

Is the offending file a proprietary raw image file?  If so, then the raw data in the file is corrupt, and as is common, other apps (like MS-Paint, etc) will only show the embedded JPG preview image. The method from @lloyd_9520  is only extracting the JPG preview of the image and not restoring the raw file image data.

Can you try opening the file from a backup, or the camera card?

Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 14.5.1, Photoshop 26.10, ACR 17.5, Lightroom 8.5, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 15.1.1 .

This is a known issue with images saved from Facebook. (and possibly other social media)

Its a JPEG file from Facebook. It opens in Photoshop the exact way the author says. So, I suggested MS Paint.

I probably don't fit in with all the others who have posted about this problem because I'm not a professional, I'm on an old Windows 10 computer and I'm using CS5. This same thing just happened to me recently with only some graphics out of many that I get from the same  person who uploads free images on Facebook daily and has done so for years. The images all work in other software.
Does this make it even more confusing?

I uploaded the images to an online file converter and converted them to PNG files. Interesting that when I open the converted PNG files I can't save them as JPGs from Photoshop. That file type is not an option.

@kathyv48620894

JPEG requires a flattened image with no floating layers, no alpha channels and 8 BPC mode.

Ensure that the opened PNG meets these criteria and/or set Legacy Save As in your Preferences/File Handling settings. Or use Save a Copy, Export As or Save for Web.

Since noone else has offered a solution to this problem. Here is what worked for me. Somehow I'm guessing the metadata of my JPG file had some corruption from within. I simply found the nearest file conversion website and converted it to JPG again which overrides the file and corrected the issue. Opened it with Photoshop again and now everything shows up correctly as it should.

Its always worth trying opening the file in microsoft paint and saving as tiff from there if on a PC. Thats my default go to if anything wont open in photoshop. I thought this was some sort of new copyright protection when this happened to me a couple of weeks a go, not just another photoshop bug !.

Strange issue. I can confirm I see the same color and artifacts problem opening the Awkwafina image in PS 26.9 and 25.12.4. Opens showing the uRGB profile. I checked the profile in EXIFTool. Normal enough, D65 white point, 2.2 gamma, sRGB colorants. I don't think that is the problem. Image opens normally in other applications. Opening and saving as TIFF then opening TIFF in PS displays normally. I'm curious to learn what is causing this to happen in PS with the JPG..

@shannonb55436569 you're replying to a 4-year-old thread, can provide a screenshot of the issue you have, also provide more detailed information, Photoshop version, PC system specs and where are you getting the images from

This issue has been very frequently reported lately, as specifically happening with jpegs downloaded from facebook. The workaround is to open jpegs through ACR, which is unaffected.

It's actually a bit surprising to see an instance from several years ago in the OP, which apparently didn't come from facebook. So it's bigger than facebook and may be a general issue with jpegs encoded in a particular way. The question is - are the jpegs in question off-spec, or is it a bona fide Photoshop bug? No answer to that yet.

But in the meantime, use ACR.

Hi! Surprised to see some activity here and that this is still an issue, I don't remember if I ever found a fix unfortunately for my specific case, but fortunately seems there is a known workaround now that you can use.
