Ok final data point.. disabling of SMT was having a performance impact on other activities I need to accomplish with higher multithreading requirement. Re-enabled SMT and spent about 10 minutes opening up about various images and used the object selection tool and others.

All things are stable now.

Looks like the crashing was a result of the MSI gameboost function within bios being turned on.

Hi all,

Please update the Nvidia Graphics drivers to the latest version, which came out last week, and let us know if that helps to resolve the crash issue. For steps, see this: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/known-issues.html#app-crash-with-tools

Thanks,

Mohit

@carlo.molinari Thanks. It's crashing in DirectML.dll. Engineering is looking into it.

Hey @Christer32231485wkzg. I couldn't find any crash reports with your account logged into the Community. I'll help you figure this out.

Please submit a crash report if you see a crash reporter pop-up: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/submit-crash-reports.html

Open Event Viewer from Windows Search.

    • Go to Windows Logs > Application Logs & look for Error & Warning logs.
      SameerK_0-1694714422355.pngexpand image
    • Share the log related to the Photoshop crash instance with us.
    •

You have three monitors connected; try unplugging extra monitors and only keep one active at a time and check how it goes.

P.S.: Try disabling Nvidia GSync from the Nvidia Control panel.

Thanks!

@Sameer K i figured out the problem seems like. Got error code 0x00000124 "bsod" blue screen of death. Did some digging, and seems like my overclocking made it crash. Ive never crashed in anything the last 5 years with this clock until now when i started to use PS. Object selection tool blasts all the cores upon marking stuff in PS so thats the reason why i was crashing. So if you are overclocked try to revert to standard bios if your having the same problem. Thanks for the help tho 🙂

Hi Michael
I had a similar issue which I could not resolve for some time.  I eventually worked out it was coming from my PSU.  When I selected the object selection tool the PSU was unable to supply enough power to my NVidia card and I got a hardware crash/reboot.  After replacing my PSU to a new 1300W unit all my troubles disappeared.
Posting in case this helps you, I understand that it could be something else but thought I would share.

Fortunately / unfortunately it's not my psu. It's brand new 1200 watt corsair with the new rtx connectors to pair with the 4090. I can max out the 4090 on stable diffusion ai generation, local gpt4all or gaming at 4k on max settings on all the games. This is purely an adobe issue.

I've completely turned off GPU use in the performance / image processing menu, switched to "old GPU support", switched to "stable", switched to cloud processing. Regardless, many tools including color replacement, selection, healing and occasionally remove background will force a complete PC reboot. Lots of issues with this program for some reason. Have had it crash my system just by attempting to open a simple 1024x1024 png file.

@michaelw9942706 focused on one part of your comment - are you running the Nvidia Gaming drivers or Studio drivers? PS prefers the Studio drivers for GPU.

I am running the gaming drivers, but I'd think turning off GPU support would alleviate issues?

I'll see if I can test studio drivers to compare later on tonight.

Hi @michaelw9942706 have you changed any of your preference settings in Photoshop to try and resolve?

If not here are some suggestions. I would do one at a time restarting PS after each to see if it improves:

1.Go to Photohop Preferences/Image Processing and change all settings to "More stable" and "Cloud" (not device).

2. Go to Photoshop Preferences/Technology Preview and check “Disable Native Canvas”.

3. Go to Photoshop Preferences/Performance and uncheck "Multithreaded Compositing".

4. Go to Photoshop Preferences/Technology Preview and check “Use Older GPU Mode (2016)”.

@Kevin Stohlmeyer just did all 3 of those. Click the object selection tool, select anything within an image, immediate PC crash.

@michaelw9942706 does your whole PC crash or just PS? PS should not crash your entire computer, just the software.

If the whole PC crashes - thats pointing towards your physcial graphic cards. Perhaps reseating them and running diagnostics on them is in order.

@Kevin Stohlmeyer whole pc crash. As state before, fortunately it is not a gpu or psu issue this is an adobe photoshop issue. I can run furmark on the gpu all night long, max out utilization for his doing AI art generation on stable diffusion, and or game the latest and greatest on end.

6 months of a brand new 4090 / psu, this is the only application that has an issue and I use my system 10 hours a day for both work and play, and this is definitely the only one that has ever caused a complete system crash.

@michaelw9942706 have you submitted Crash Reports to Adobe via the CR tool? If so, do you use this email on the forum, is that your Adobe ID email... we ask because we can look up your crashes to get to the team to see what they see.  Also, what version of Ps beta or Ps release are you seeing this please.

Looking at the help file, it seems it should typically generate a crash file dump prompt to submit upon re-opening, but it's causing such a sudden crash, this isn't even a blue screen or other issue, it's an immediate power cycle / reboot, I don't think it has time to capture a crash as it doesn't even save the last opened files and recover them.

@michaelw9942706 we know you are very confident that it is NOT hardware related, but a system hang or freeze requiring a computer restart usually means a low level failure such as a driver (bad video card driver, etc), failing hardware (hard disk, video card, etc.) or damaged OS installation.

@CShubert understood. Not much else I can do, Ive stress tested both cpu and gpu for hours in the past 24 hours, and can push them to the limits without issue on various applications (stress test, gaming and ai generation) . Unfortunately seems to be a problem between adobe and it's interface with drivers or windows operating system. Especially when somthing as simple as opening a 1mb png can cause a full system crash.

@michaelw9942706 a couple more questions:

  1. Adobe Photoshop is the only app with this issue?
  2. Did this begin with 25.0?
  3. Are you overclocking ?

@michaelw9942706 the team is seeing a Event ID 41 in the report and shared this:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-client/performance/event-id-41-restart

Here is the info in the About this shutdown:

When a shutdown is initiated, Windows sends a WM_QUERYENDSESSION message to all running applications that have a user interface (UI) thread. This message asks the application to save any unsaved data and terminate gracefully. If the application does not respond to the message within a certain time limit, Windows sends a WM_ENDSESSION message to the application, which terminates the application immediately.

If all applications respond to the WM_QUERYENDSESSION message and terminate gracefully, Windows logs a clean shutdown event in the System event log. If any application does not respond to the message or terminates abnormally, Windows logs a dirty shutdown event in the System event log.

The unexpected shutdowns are mostly caused by components outside the operating system.

A dirty shutdown is when a computer system is shut down without going through the proper shutdown process. This can happen when the power is suddenly cut off or when the computer is forced to shut down by holding down the power button. A dirty shutdown can cause data loss or corruption and can also lead to boot-up problems.

The dirty shutdown count registry is a registry key in the Windows Registry that is used to track the number of times a computer system has been shut down without going through the proper shutdown process. This key can be useful when troubleshooting boot-up problems to identify whether the system was powered off incorrectly.

You can also clear all the values (like DirtyShutdown, LastAliveStamp, TimeStampInterval) in the following registry key: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Reliability. This can help prevent the Shutdown Event Tracker from appearing after an unexpected shutdown.
