P: Decoupling the presetted "usual" brush size from OS operating aids (macOS) [2016]

Community Beginner ,
Apr 27, 2022 Apr 27, 2022

Copied

1. Photoshop 23.3.1 (and older!)

2. Mac OS 12.3.1 (and older!)

3. The Setting for brush size is put to "usual",

  • means the diameter of that temporary circle should be exactly the same as the brushstroke, independent of the selected hardness
  • Due to a large monitor, a slightly enlarged view of the mouse pointer can be helpful to some users.
Thanks to the Mac OS operating aids, you can customise this individually.

4. Now the size of the brushstroke and the diameter of that surrounded circle in Photoshop doesn't match any more.

  • While the operating aids of Mac OS display a larger image of the mouse pointer in a fixed solution, the brushstroke in Photoshop is variable and proportional to the zoom factor of the picture.
  • Unfortunatelly the OS operation aid zoom for the mouse pointer influences the diameter of that circle, too.
  • In this case it ist not possible to adjust the position of the brushstroke exactly, that's a pitty.

5. The best would be, if you can set the Ps brushsize decoupled from the OS operating aids. (Maybe a checkbox at that section, which allows you to de-/activate a professional view)

Thanks for listening. Best Frank

@marc21867922j5d2

I had this issue for several years and versions and found out through these forums that the problem was that I had changed my cursor size in System Prefs > Accessibility > Display. Setting the size to Normal fixed the Brush size issue in Photoshop. Can you try that?

Incorrect Brush size: On macOS, the painted result is smaller than the brush cursor size you see on screen, determine if you have an increased Cursor Size specified in your System Preferences: Accessibility > Display settings

Make sure it's set to "Normal"

Are you using a mac os?

If you are, it's probably that the system cursor size is set to something other than Normal.

Go to System Preferences>Accessibility>Display and set the Cursor size to Normal

In photoshop CS6 when using a brush to paint, the actual painted brush mark is smaller than the preview of the brush size.

Incase i mixed you up with my explanation, I’m attaching  a pic that shows (on the left) the size of the selected brush and how small is the painted mark. And on the (left) what i see on a different computer where the brush's size is the same of what is actually painted.

note: the colour i paint is white and the black circle is the brush size preview.

Its very strange because i know that what is painted should be exactly the same diameter of the brush. But that is not the case on the left sample.

Please help im disorientated and cannot work!

Solved the problem!! Shape dynamics is on by default in Photoshop CC 2018. Go to Window/brushes/ Brush Settings and toggle Shape dynamics off to correct this situation.

When i use the brush with  say size 200 the real size on the document/photo is smaller.

It is with the mouse and the wacom tablet.

I reset the brush, no change. I try everything to go to normale.

What is the solution in my settings , or a bug in cc2018?

I have cc2018 now 3 months.

Opacity is at 100% Flow is at 100% Hardness is at 100%

All of a sudden my brush is only filling about 90% of the area it should. It is like I have an inner stroke set on it.

This makes masking a real pain because I have to guess where my brush is going to cover.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It could have something to do with your Operating System settings. Recently in this forum someone else was having a similar problem and they eventually found a setting that was altering the magnification of their cursor. Look for settings to do with your mouse and/or Accessibility.

Did you happen to be using the DSR feature in Nvidia control panel?  I reverted back to my old monitor settings and the issue cleared for me. I haven't found an explanation of why though. There has to be a why!

Neither what you suggested worked and the Nvidia does not exist on the new Imac.

I tried reducing settings in preferences nothing happened. Disconnected my secondary monitor nothing happened.

Any other suggestions? I am using Photoshop 2018 but I checked Photoshop 2019 and get the same problem.

Help! Thanks for any suggestions in advance.
