P: Depth Blur results in black areas

Adobe photoshop version 23.0.1

Not workin depth blur effect. it's resault comes black

Version: Photoshop (23.0.1)
Platform: Windows 10
Any time I try the Depth Blur neural filter, I get black background instead of blur - you can see in my screenshot what it looks like at 70% blur strength. This result happens no matter where I have the strength slider. I have yet to see any actual results.

Anyone else experienced this issue? Any way to fix it?

Go to Preferences > Technology Previews... and check "Disable Native Canvas" - then restart Photoshop. Does the problem still occur?

@Nirukshan Your drivers for both your AMD card and your Intel card are out of date. Make sure your drivers are up to date. Then, make sure you specify to use the High Performance option in the AMD Catalyst Control Center. See step 7 and additonal troubleshooting instructions here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-gpu-graphics-card.html#Troubleshoot

@ajhalliday it is most likely your card. See the instructions I gave to @Nirukshan. If that doesn't work, it may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

I'm working with Ps 2022 (23.1.1). Win 10 Pro 64-bit desktop PC. Right up front I'll say I'm not going to uninstall/reinstall Ps. Nor will I do a reset or rollback to previous versions. I've done those things in past and lost all my many settings and customized skies, actions, etc.. (even with backups!).

The Depth Blur effect (neural filters) used to work for me in previous Ps versions. Sometimes it was less than subtle or accurate in where it placed blur. But it worked. Now, every time I try to use it, an opaque, black, mask-like looking overlay appears on my active image (vs. a blur being applied). See snip. It seems to happen as soon as the Blur slider moves beyond 1/3 of the way from the left. Which makes the filter useless for adding an increasing amount of blur. It happens whether or not I've added a focal point to the image in the Depth Blur UI and whether or not I've clicked the box to protect the main subject. Focal Distance is also mostly always greyed out.

BTW, at the same time the Depth Blur Neural Filter stopped working right, the Landscape Mixer also started to bomb out. I can no longer apply any of the Presets that comes in that UI. Some of which I liked using. I can now only use the "Custom" option.

Both these issues started after the most recent 1-2 CC updates. They were working fine when I updated to Ps 2022.

I'm getting the exact same issue. It only developed after my latest Ps (I'm now on 23.1.1 rel.) & CC updates.

It was Not doing this when I updated to Ps 2022. I haven't changed any settings, GPU or CPU.

I'm using a Win 10 Pro 64-bit desktop PC. AMD processor (R9 M360) that is up-to-date (I check it regularly but double-checked again). I also ran through all the diagnostics (including the Help > GPU Compatibility and various Performance & Tech Preview Prefs options - shutting Ps 2022 down & restarting after each). I'm not in any power-saving mode with my AMD GPU. It's very frustrating - I'm not a particularly techie person, I just need to process photos and create art.

Coincidentally, at the same time I started getting the opaque black mask-like overlays (rather than blurring) in the neural filter Depth Blur UI, I also now find that in Landscape Mixer (also a neural filter) I can no longer get the Adobe Presets in that UI for that filter to work. They used to work fine prior to my update to 23.1.1 & the most recent 2 CC updates ...... I can still get the "Custom" option in that Landscape Mixer UI to work. But I had favorite Presets that I can no longer use. It's a non-starter. I see zero processing activity (I used to see a progress bar) now when I click on any of the Landscape Mixer Presets. It seems very coincidental that both Neural Filters went south at the same time and with no changes to my system.

@Fotomaker01RA Looks like you're the same situation with the two cards. The intel card isn't supported. Try step 7 here to set the high performance card: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-gpu-graphics-card.html

Hi Jeffrey, I went through all the steps at the link before posting here. I already have my Intel (2nd) card disabled because when it's active it causes issues for at least one (Topaz...) of my 3rd party plugin filters. So, I'm running off my AMD. Those 2 Neural Filters were the primary reason I updated to 2022. Particularly the Landscape Mixer, but I had started using Depth Blur (especially the Export Depth Map only feature) quite a bit. I'd really like them to be working again as they were when I updated to Ps 2022. There seem to be a substantial enough number of users that this isn't 1-2 people's "flukey" cards or card setups... Something has definitely happened and changed in a negative way impacting usage from Adobe's end - given that these filters worked fine for me until after the update to my current Ps vers and the last 2 CC updates. I cannot rollback because I will lose custom content I've created. It happened the last time I rolled back due to an Adobe "issue" with the docked Extensions all being blank that a lot of Win users were experiencing.

As mentioned above. I'm not particularly (overly) technical. So I'm not entirely sure where I would test out that #extension and/or apply it. Can you pls. give a pointer on that?

I have a feeling I'd better create a Restore Pt before I mess around with that....

Even though I'm not an engineer (s/w or otherwise), it still seems counter-intuitive to me that when I didn't make any changes to my Win 10 PC (or settings in Ps Prefs) all of sudden a few neural filters that worked fine before several Adobe updates would stop doing so. [I just scrolled up to top on the page where that text string is - I assume I'd use the full 2 lines of what appears in that #extension to disable GPU while using Neural Filters - I see a Win folder hierarchy noted up there. Would I add/insert that line of text into whatever is in the pointed to portion of the folder hierarchy? I don't want to kill anything else by doing the wrong thing...]

I run a fair number of 3rd party software that (as it gets more "AI"-ish) is increasingly computationally draining for my system. I don't want to disable anything (when I'm not even sure what disable means, functionally to my PC) that might impact the performance of those other programs - most of which run as plugins to Ps to give me a smooth workflow.

But - back to your suggestion - if you can help me out re: how to test it, I can give you the feedback for your engineers. Thx!

Jeffrey, Here's an update (8:10pm, 2/19/22). I followed the Adobe instructions to enable opt. extensions in Ps (2022) for my Win 10 PC (up-to-date AMD GPU, Intel CPU). I followed the steps for 'Disable GPU for Neural Filters'.

Bottom Line: It didn't correct the bug issues wrt black overlays being placed on images I call to the Depth Blur Neural Filter from my Ps 2022 layer (working with a .tif of ~ 19MB size). [NOTE: Landscape Mixer still isn't fixed either. It still cannot apply the Adobe-provided Presets as it could when I updated to Ps 2022. But I'll keep this post focused on the discussion thread topic of opaque black overlays on images in the Depth Blur UI and how unstabe they're behaving]

Here's what I observed after making your recommended Ps opt. extension to the appropriate Ps 2022 Settings path....

* My .tif opened in the Depth Blur UI to the default "Blur Strength" = 50. I see the black overlay on All subjects in my example image (not the sky). Before that black overlay appears I see the processing status, "Processing on Device" alert and the progress bar for that. See snip (labelled in filename)

* With the Depth Blur UI still open/active I pulled the "Blur Strength" to = 0 (zero). The black overlay disappears & my image looks as it looks originally (before being called into Depth Blur) on the Ps layer stack. ie, no blurring.

* With Depth Blur UI still open/active I gradually incremented the "Blur Strength" to </= 25. Very slight, barely noticeable blurring. No black overlay. The moment Blur Strength got to >= 26, strips of black overlay started to appear randomly in my image. Unlike the initial opening of the image, for all subsequent, incremented slider pulls I did Not get the "Processing on Device" processing notif & no processing status bar. There'd be a brief pause of a few secs. then a change would be visible.

* I tried seeing what the opposite extreme would do - I pulled the Blur Strength" slider to = 100. The 1st time I did it it placed a black overlay in a random chunk of the sky in my test image. I lowered Blur Strength by roughly 10's down to the 60% range - it kept shifting where it was placing random (mostly) strips of black overlay. When I slid Blur Strength back up to the low 80's it covered the entire test image in black overlay. See 2 representative snips:

* For my final test I tried several iterations with "Focus Subject" clicked ON. Checking that box does select the most prominent object in my image. But. I either get black overlay or blur (it's random) with various moves of the "Blur Strength" slider. See one ex. snip (the next time I might use these same settings I get a diff. result - it is literally random):

* I have access to use of the "Focal Range" slider. But - ever since this instability of the Depth Blur filter developed these bugs (incl. the black overlays) the "Focal Distance" slider has been mostly greyed out & unusable. Ditto for the UI representation of my image (is it considered a Nav box? I don't know the Adobe term for that box with image that's in the filter panel). It always appears (since these issues started) as if it's behind a grey haze or as if the clarity for it is greatly reduced.

As noted above, I'm also rarely seeing the "Processing on Device" notation and/or processing status bar. When the filter was working (when I 1st updated to Ps 2022 & before I updated to my current release and ran the 2 latest CC updates) I'd see that notation/bar each time I made a setting change in the Depth Blur UI.

Hope this helps. It's the best way I know how to describe what I'm experiencing as a non-engineer but rather photo enthusiast...

Hi Jeffrey, It's been a few weeks since I last provided the details re: this issue (see my other posts in this thread that you responded to - including my detailed test findings and snips of Ps results + my Win 10 up-to-date AMD system specs info). I'm checking back since I miss these features I used a lot when I updated to Ps 2022... What is the current progress by the developers re: correcting the (1) Depth Blur - Neural Filter causing black patches at any blur level > 25% (which started in releases following 23.0.0) & (2) Landscape Mixer - Neural Filter no longer able to apply Adobe Presets to imported (ie, called into the filter) images?

I've asked if there's a reliable way to remove the graphics card from processing.

Obviously, updating your graphics card is probably the most robust way to improve compatibility with Photoshop.

My graphics card was working fine for the neural filters when I updated to Ps 2022. So something definitely changed that wasn't due to my system.

Not to mention that processor inventory is virtually non-existent due to supply chain issues and so prices have more than doubled in the past 2 yrs b/c of that (I've checked several times since Dec. 2020). The new pricing puts them way out of my affordability range (as someone who can't write that off...). I'd also looked at some NVIDIA options when I researched it - but I often see users posting on forums (for a number of the 3rd party filter plugins I use) that NVIDIA isn't working right for them based on how those s/w companies are writing code & not collaborating with NVIDIA. So, for now my AMD (that previously worked for all my Ps projects & neural filters) will have to suffice. Fingers crossed on a fix from the talented devs at Adobe!
