P: Desaturated image in Photoshop on import from Camera RAW - HDR feature enabled/disabled

I installed the latest version of Photoshop, then experiemnted with the new HDR feature in Camera RAW. To activate the HDR feature I went to Preferences>File Handling>Camera RAW Preferences>Technology Previews and checked HDR Output. I then went to Prerences>Technology Preview and checked Precise Color Management for HDR Display.

I played with the new feature and liked it, but decided that for now I wanted to deactivate it. So I went back into Preferences and unchecked the items I previously had selected.

Unfortunately now when importing an image from Camera RAW to Photoshop, the image is highly desaturated and I have very little latitude to recover the sauration. My workaround is to export the image as a .tif file, and then open it in Photoshop.

I have uninstalled Photoshop and reinstalled it. I have also reinstalled the previous version of Photoshop. I continue to have this problem. I am running on a 2021 Macbook Pro M1 with 32GB RAM. I have attached two jpgs to show the issue. The first is what the image looks like when it is imported from Camera RAW from a stored .DNG file. The second is the same image that was coverted to a .tif file from Camera RAW and then i=opened in Photoshop. Any assistance is appreciated.

Can you delete the adjustments in ACR? Open the file, click the 3 dots and select 'Reset to default'; does that change the behavior when opened in Photoshop?

@DeanAllman HDR is a new area so there might be some ground to cover.

Can you go into Photoshop and copy/paste your System Info (under the Help menu).

Also, check your Camera Raw Preferences to make sure you have TIFF support the same as JPEG:

Finally, can you send a copy of your RAW image along?

Hi,

Thanmk you for this email, I had exactly the same problem with 2023 update (using an Apple MAC) and as I was trying to get some photo work I had taken the day before was very frustrating. However, with the help of the 'fix' exporting a tiff format all them worked perfectly. I hope Photoshop get a fix for this problem.

@erich20359509 , @DeanAllman I think I have a solution for this. When you turn on the HDR feature in ACR, it bumps ACR to support 32-bit editing. If you turn the HDR feature off, the 32-bit mode gets stuck ON. This will affect all images subsequently opened into Ps from ACR.

The fix is to go into ACR preferences and select 8-bit on the workflow tab. Restart Photoshop, open the pref a second time, and things should work again from there.

I have a similar problem -- Mac Pro 14" with M1 chip, upgraded to Ventura. When I open an image in CR, it's fine in the CR dialog box; but when I open it in Photoshop 23, the image is very overexposed. The same happens if I select "Open in Camera Raw" for a jpeg. In contrast, applying the CR Filter to a PSD or Tiff does not overexpose the image. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling PS and Bridge; using earlier versions of PS and Bridge; tried the suggestions below about CR preferences. Nothing helps.
