P: Dialog boxes / error messages pop up invisibly - macOS

When an error or alert occurs the dialog box is invisible. Some examples of the alerts include but are not limited to: "No pixels were selected because the layer is empty" or "Do you want to save the document before closing?" Clicking anywhere on the screen prompts an audible error noise (as though you tried to click outside of the dialog box you've been prompted to respond to). The box is not appearing on a different monitor or behind other windows, it is simply invisible and cannot be interacted with unless you press Enter or Escape on the keyboard. Upon pressing the Escape key to close the dialog box, the box becomes visible for a fraction of a second before closing—revealing its location. This has hindered my workflow, especially when trying to close a document I don't want to save changes to because then I must force Photoshop to quit. Running on Mac. Version 23.2.2

I am also experiencing the same issue. Have added further detail below to assist with debugging.

Issue: Dialog boxes/prompts/pop ups not displaying when performing an action that requires confirmation.

Photoshop version: 23.3.1 (plus the previous version I had installed - not sure what it was)

OS: Mac OS Monterey v12.3.1

Chip: Apple M1 Max (in case it's relevant)

Steps to reproduce:

I have not given specific reproduction steps as this issue is widespread and by providing specific reproduction steps, it could be interpreted as only occurring with those specific parameters. The steps taken are common actions that people perform, and there's nothing special about the files that I'm editing. I have experienced these issues on multiple files.

Some examples of when this issue has occurred are:

Closing a file that has unsaved changes
Resizing an image to a smaller size
Flattening an image that has many layers
Applying transforms to a shape

The issue occurs both when an external monitor is connected as well as when the external monitor is disconnected and I'm just using the laptop monitor. Please note: I had never connected an external monitor to the laptop prior to this issue occurring so the issue was not caused by having an external monitor connected. I connected an external monitor to try and debug the issue. I tried shifting the main photoshop window to the external monitor in case the dialog box was hidden behind the main window but no such luck.

I tried the Cmd + Tab solution mentioned by Jeffrey but this makes no difference.

As the original poster mentioned, the dialog is invisible until you press a key (escape or enter) and then it briefly appears (though not long enough to actually read it) before disappearing again. As you can't read it, you don't know what exactly you're agreeing to if you press enter. This really needs to be fixed or people will end up with unintended results, one of which is potentially losing their work.

Expected result:

When an action requires confirmation and there is a blocking dialog box, the dialog box should be displayed on top of the active Photoshop window. The user should be able to close the dialog box by:

pressing either the close or cancel buttons; or
pressing the Ok/Confirm button to confirm that the action should be completed.

(Please excuse me if the button names mentioned above are not accurate - I'm not entirely sure what's written on the buttons as they're not displayed long enough to be able to read them.)

Actual result:

When an action requires confirmation and there is a blocking dialog box, the dialog box is hidden so the user is unaware that they need to provide confirmation.

If you press a key that is not enter or escape, an alert sound is audible but there is still nothing displayed on screen and the user is still blocked from doing anything else.

If you press the escape key, the dialog box will briefly display (max. 2 seconds) before disappearing and no action is performed (whether that be closing the file, resizing the file, flattening the image, etc).

If you press the enter key, the dialog box will briefly display (max. 2 seconds) before disappearing and the requested action will be performed.

I can confirm this bug still happening (macOS 12.3.1, Adobe Photoshop Version: 23.3.1 20220419.r.426 4d24a4c arm64) - incredibly annoying, forcing me to save files I do not want to save.

This could be unrelated, but I haven't seen this error since I removed/disabled all Photoshop plugins that I had active. I am unsure of what they all were, but I know one of them was Attention Insight for Photoshop

I do have some plugins installed, of course - I'll give it a try, though "Attention Insight" is none of them - however, I haven't had any changes in these plugins for a while now, and everything was fine a while ago.

Is anyone else having issues with their newest Macbook M1 running on Monterrey in photoshop?

Bugs I currently experience:

- trying to close a file without saving, the window that will ask you if you want to save or not doesn appear, I only see if once i click esc to basically abort the tast. It flickers up and goes. Only closing out Photoshop helps

-Liquify task for a selection. I can liquify for the whole image. but if I decide to only wanna liquify within a selection of an image it lets me to the task but once entering the liquify and getting to the main image view the liquify doesn't apply at all and I have to redo without the selection.

My computer is fully updated with everything and this never happened beofre I got my new laptop but this is super annoying and really shouldn't happen and hope can be fixed asap

When the issue was occurring to me, I was running Ps on my Macbook Pro (14-inch, 2021) macOS Monterey. Photoshop was on my laptop's display. I did have a secondary Dell display connected at the same time.

I tried that. currently the liquify seems to be working for selections but the window with a taks like saving still doesnt show up. or if I wanna drag a layer form an 8bit into a 16bit file. there is a window popping up and all these window dont show up unless i try to abort with esc. so even with deleting preferences same issue persist

Same as Docwalls. M1 Max Mac studio. Dialogue boxes dont appear on the screen, the only way I know they are there is if I hit escape, they flash up for a milisecond before closing. The only way out of this is to either hit enter (accept whatever the preselected option is at the top of the dialogue box) or force quit.

I have tried the option where you reset all the "dont show me this again" boxes on dialogue boxes, it hasnt worked

I had the same issue. And I talked to a adobe rep and the gave me the tip to close out photoshop. Go to applications and right click the adobe Photoshop icon. Click Get Info. Tick the box for Rosetta. Its something that helps the application with the M1 processor. Since I clicked that issue has been gone

Hi!

Briefly: Apple, clamp shell mode from MacBookPro, error messages are invisible and unelectable somewhere in the background.

Long: New to the Apple world, I now use additionally a MacBookPro with M1 Max, plus the latest OS 12.3.1.
Also new PhotoShop 22, 23.3.2. (I don't know if that happens with older versions as i just begun using PS on my new MBP.)
Using the MBP in ClampShell mode. So that means connected to power supply and then closed and connected to a 3440x1440 monitor (if that's relevant). So I only have the image on the monitor, not on the display of the notebook.
For editing I always have 5 to 40 images open at once.
For the error, it doesn't matter if I have only one image visible and editing or many images displayed as tiles.

If there is _any_ error to react to, this notification window is in the background. And it is somewhere in the background. It pops up for a fraction of a second and then disappears. But it is active! If you press ESC or Enter, this window will be operated. But one does not see what is! You can't chose that notification with any known key- or mouse-combinaton. It's just hidden somewhere, but active. It is not behind any windows. It is not behind something you can select with Cmd&Tab.
It can be that a font set is not found and is now asked for. Or if I save a picture and then while this I press another key, the "save" remains at 99% until I press ESC. Or other error messages, for example if I had pressed the CMD key instead of Option for some operations.

I never had that behaviour on Windows.

Anything else you need to know?

I run the same version of Photoshop 23.3.2 and Monterey 12.3.1 on M1/32GB, the same problems still exist as it has been for the past few months.

Adobe: This seriously affects basic usage of photoshop - it needs to get escalated and fixed!!! A half decent application at this age should not have sh*t like this, at least not for long!

It would help if you gave details of your issue. As Photoshop seems to be working OK for the majority of users, it's likely to be a system rather than an application issue.

Can you describe the problem?

Have you tried resetting the Photoshop preferences, which you can do under the General tab in Photoshop preferences?

Have you tried using the Adobe Cleaner Tool?

Photoshop 23.x has been running great on my M1 Max MBP, until today. Now I'm experiencing the disappearing dialog boxes when trying to save. A restart of the computer fixes the issues, but only temporarily. It crept back up within a few file open/saves. I use my MBP with the lid closed and a single external monitor; been doing this for years without issue until today.

To reiterate a tip from someone else in this post... if you Option+click the Photoshop icon in the dock, the save dialog box will appear. Yay!
