P: Disappearing Text/Font Issues

Since updating to Photoshop CC 2015.5, I have encountered many challenges in having text appear properly for me. Characters in a text layer will disappear and reappear on a whim and there's nothing that I've been able to troubleshoot that has helped.

Testing Notes:

Bounding box is not an issue, as this happens as this will happen no only the LAST characters, but the FIRST characters of a text layer. Usually if the bounding box is not big enough, the whole word will disappear, not just one or two characters.

The example below is created as Point Text, not a Paragraph Text, so there aren't any bounding boxes.

This problem seems to affect capital letters especially, as changing it to
lowercase works just fine (but see #4 below when it gets wacky again).

This problem doesn't appear to discriminate between fonts. The screenshots above is your plain ol' Helvetica. Fonts that never had an issue in a past version of PS now have this issue. Some don't.

When I hit the down arrow on the current font selected and roll over the
different fonts installed on my computer (which gives a live preview of
what the font looks like on my canvas), it will flip back and forth
between showing the character and not, depending on what font is selected.

Here's the font "Source Sans Pro" selected:

The problem is really inconsistent. I've had the "H" in "Hello World" both appear, and then disappear again
on its own whim (while playing around switching between a font that
works properly and back to one that didn't before).

Here's the font "Close" selected... Umm... a different word disappeared all together?!

Font size affects if a character shows up or not...

Here's my font at 52pt:

Trying to test when the text will reappear, I selected the text and kept reducing the font (shift down arrow to jump the numbers down)... Ooo! It reappears at 12pt!

Then clicking the check mark box to commit the change.... "Nah, just kidding! I'm not actually working."

I'm not sure if this problem has anything to do with the Alternative Character Selector that was introduced? This thing...

Even this functionality in itself is inconsistent when it shows up (never sure what triggers the marquee underline; how to get the underline back; underline disappears when you select a different font; underline doesn't show up again when you select the same font as before, etc, etc)... but that is another issue all together...

Anyway, I could probably play around with this all day and it would do crazy stuff in all different ways. Hopefully this can be fixed and that this is helpful for you folks troubleshooting.

For now, I'm going to try to revert back to the previous release 😞

I am also having terrible problems when using the type tool. Text randomly disappears and has rendered this essential tool useless. I have a Macbook Pro with latest software. ADOBE FIX THIS!

I'm having the EXACT SAME issues!!! I called tech support over a week ago and was on the phone for over 2 hours and was told it was an issue with my Mac. Apple has confirmed it 100% isn't my machine but a bug in the software update. As a business owner who relies on Photoshop it is extremely disheartening that this hasn't been fixed yet.

So, this bug is only happening on Mac? Is it happening every time / reliably? Have you tried resetting your preferences? Have you tried turning off your GPU, found under Prefences > Performance? Can you please post your System Info here -- you can find it under Help > System Info. There's some additional element involved triggering this...

Hi David-

I turned off my GPU, still have problems. Forgot to mention in my first post that when the "Update Text" box appears when opening an older file, clicking yes causes some of the text to disappear.

Hi Peter,

Thank you for these details. Really, they are helpful. I do have a couple of follow up questions though...:

a) do you have the Glyph Panel open when you're encountering this problem? Are you using it?

b) does this happen with ALL fonts? Certain ones?

c) do you have this problem all the time or is it intermittent?

d) would you be willing to do a web-hosted screenshare with me the next time you encounter this problem, so I can help troubleshoot it with you live?

Oh, and anyone else with this problem, if you could post your Sys Info and answer these questions, it'd be wonderful. Peter is running OS 10.11.5 and Christina is running OS 10.11.4. What about you?

a) No glyph panel is not open.
b) Yes it happens will all fonts.
c) It is intermittent but happens most of the time.
d) Yes I would be willing to do a screenshare. I've done it once already with someone from Photoshop tech support and after 2 hours on the phone/computer, they weren't able to determine what was causing the problem. They saw it occur several times though.

We are trying to narrow down this bug and need bit of help from you.

Can you remove the Faux Bold ( uncheck the icon for Faux Bold from character panel ) from the text run and reproduce this bug ? If you want to use bold text, please use font style "Bold" from the font style popup menu.

Hello Vinod-
I removed the faux bold from my skia text in two different files as requested. In both cases the text stopped disappearing. If I discover any new examples of disappearing text not covered by this fix I will let you know. Thanks for the help!

This is not just a Mac issue. I am having the same problems and I can't even open files a lot of times because it tells me "selected font failed during last operation" and then will not open the file.
I have tried rebooting to no effect (both Photoshop and the computer) and uninstalling and reinstalling fonts. When I uninstall the fonts, I can usually get the file to open, but then I either have the disappearing text issue or it still throws up the "font failed" or "program error" message. This has been a non-stop issue since installing version 2015.5 and it is keeping me from getting any work done!

I'm having the exact same issue. I had a design that was working perfectly. I update Photoshop and text is randomly disappearing. Some in the middle of paragraphs, some beginning, some end. There seems to be no rhyme or reason. If I edit the text the potion that disappears can even change. You can't even rasterize it to get it to show up for print. I'm hosed! Please fix this!!!

Hi Paul,

Is any of the text that's disappearing Faux Bold? If so, a work around for now is to change that to actual bold. Does this solve your problem? Also, what font(s) are you encountering this problem with?

Thought I made a follow up post but I guess I must have missed the submit button. My replies to David's questions below:

a) do you have the Glyph Panel open when you're encountering this problem? Are you using it?
The Glyph panel is present but collapsed in the side bar. No, I'm not using it.

b) does this happen with ALL fonts? Certain ones?
Certain ones seem to be affected. As I mentioned in my original post, even default installed fonts like Helvetica are being affected.

c) do you have this problem all the time or is it intermittent?
It's intermittent. I worked on 2 existing files made on a previous version of Photoshop and they seemed to be fine—possibly due to not needing to make a new text layer.

What's weird is when I tried to switch to the "Essentials" workspace and then back to my custom workspace, then tried to make a new text layer in the same "Hello world" document, the problem didn't occur. I could resize and change the font without issue. Selecting the "broken" layer in the same file to see if it would fix itself did nothing, however.

I don't know if changing the workspace had anything to do with this behaviour. I did start a new file and the whole line of text would disappear when I changed the size.

d) would you be willing to do a web-hosted screenshare with me the next time you encounter this problem, so I can help troubleshoot it with you live?

Can you remove the Faux Bold ( uncheck the icon for Faux Bold from character panel ) from the text run and reproduce this bug ? If you want to use bold text, please use font style "Bold" from the font style popup menu.

Hi Vinod, it does seem to go back to normal when I uncheck the Faux Bold. Thing is, not all fonts have a bold option, hence why it was selected in the first place. The other alternative would be to put a stroke on it, although it doesn't render quite as nicely.

Toggling Faux Bold back on seems to keep it properly rendered. I'll have to play around a bit more to see if the problem still occurs without Faux Bold.

Would it help if I provided the file that's having issues?

Howdy Christina,

Two question-requests:

FIRST, when you have the problem, could you try saving the file, closing Photoshop, trashing your preferences (hold down SHIFT+OPT+COMMAND on launch), and trying again? I would be REALLY curious to see if that fixes it.

SECOND, when you have the problem, could you again save the file but they clear your font cache (step #6 here):https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop-cs5.html ? Again, I would like to know if that clears the problem.

Hi David,

Sorry for the late reply.

I tested your requests out below. Note: I just updated to version 2015.15.1

FIRST - I closed Photoshop and double-clicked the file while holding Shift+Opt-Cmd. The "H" was still missing from "Hello". However, using the text tool to click into the text made the letter reappear. Clicking the checkmark to commit the text (without any other changes) kept the reappearance of the "H".

SECOND - This didn't make any difference, probably because the folder was empty. I even tried to see if there were hidden files in the folder and there was nothing.

I'll shoot you an email with the test file shortly!

Updated to latest version a week ago and alot of my optiRadiant fonts disappear when I try to change color or words . Now when I boot up photoshop it asks me to create a library off the document and either way I still have this issue I am using windows 10 version and have a Adobe cloud subscription. Fix this adobe as it renders your program almost useless to me.

Are you using Faux Bold? Do you have this problem with all fonts or just this one? Also, have you tried the steps I outlined above?

The offer to create a library is universal to all text in a document and has nothing to do with displaying text.

No not using faux bold but I did find if I changed the rendering from Sharp or Crisp to none it is less likely to happen. It's strange because it's not single characters or words disappearing, it's as though a square block appears above your text erasing whatever characters lie below that box. It's random in size and so frustrating. You never know when or where it's going to strike. It's created havoc for me.

Also worth noting. If I see the problem I can close the file reopen it and it's fine, or sometimes the dissapearing text will be somewhere else in the file. If you save a copy to pdf or jpg or whatever the missing text is still missing. Whatever is rendered on screen is what you get. The fact that you can close and reopen the psd file and have it resolved or different is what gets me. Because you can think you're all good and next time you open the file it can be back to bite you.

Hey Paul,

Unfortunately, I'm a little buried at the moment so I cannot really dig into this right now but can you try a quick test for me? Could you go into your Preferences > Performance and turn OFF Use Graphics Processor. It's starting to sound like you're having trouble with your GPU... A longshot, but that might explain the symptoms AND why I cannot repro.

P: Disappearing Text/Font Issues

1 Correct answer
