Hi there, when creating a new document

File > New > Film and Video > Presets

It would be better if the Film and Video presets were updated, so that

Window > Timeline > Create Video Timeline

used the correct frame rate for all presets,

(and also, it'd be nice if more modern presets were defined).

While Adobe's Media Encoder, Premiere Pro and After Effects have a wide range of well-configured Film and Video Presets to start projects with, Photoshop has a narrow selection, with several presets that are unreliable - see below.

There is also another issue, which seems related:

Photoshop is unable to remember a 24fps or 25fps frame rate setting, in a Video Timeline document that isn't created from one of the few presets that work, and converting to and from Frame Animation. For example:

  1. Start with an HDTV 1080p preset
  2. Create a video timeline - the frame rate is 29.97fps
  3. Animation Timeline panel > Settings > Set Timeline Frame Rate > 25fps
  4. Convert to Frame Animation
  5. Convert back to Video Timeline
  6. The Frame Rate is converted to 30fps

This would be a surprise to most users, and not what is expected from a frame rate conversion.

If at least one of these issues was improved, it would help make Photoshop animation more idiot-proof, as well as help the reliability and teachability of Adobe's documentation. Here is what Adobe's Animation Overview Documentation says:

When you create a new document, the default timeline duration is 10 seconds. The frame rate depends on the chosen document preset. For non-video presets (like International Paper), the default rate is 30 fps. For video presets, the rate is 25 fps for PAL and 29.97 for NTSC

Nothing mentioned about the surprises awaiting anyone who uses any other Film or PAL Default Presets that are incorrectly configured.

Currently,

  • Film (2K) - creates a 24fps timeline, correctly.
  • Film (4K) - creates a 24fps timeline, correctly.
  • Film (8K) - creates a 30fps timeline, incorrectly
  • PAL D1/DV - creates a 25fps timeline correctly
  • PAL D1/DV Widescreen - creates a 30fps timeline incorrectly
  • PAL D1/DV Square Pixel - creates a 30fps timeline incorrectly
  • PAL D1/DV Widescreen Square Pixel - creates a 30fps timeline incorrectly

Workaround for 24fps Film:

(International Cinema, various formats)

  • create a Film (2K) document, then you can resize the image (to HD1080p, 6K or 8K for example), and the 24fps frame rate will be reliably set and preserved when converting between Video Timeline and Frame Animation, and converting back again.

Workaround for 25fps Video:

(Many regions, worldwide)

  • create a PAL D1/DV document, View > uncheck the pixel aspect ratio display, then you can resize the image (to HD1080p, 4K or 8K for example), and the 25fps frame rate will be reliably set and preserved when converting between Video Timeline and Frame Animation, and converting back again.

cheers and happy animating,

Thanks for the detailed report. I've asked engineering to investigate.
