P: Grey Point Tool "Could not use the gray point tool because the settings in the file are invalid"

Getting this " Could not use the gray point tool because the settings in the file are invalid" error very often when color correcting scanned negatives with Curves like in this post:

Every photoshop version from ps 6 to 21.1.3 displays the error.
Unable to replicate on ps 5.5 or older.

Appears to have been fixed in photoshop 2021 (ps version 22.0)

Seems to only happen if any channel's curve is inverted. It may be As Designed but the error isn't very helpful to say why it's invalid. Let me ask an engineer

Is this with every file or just one?  Since others are not reporting this, I suspect that the problem is localized to your file or your computer might have a problem, possibly malware or conflicting software. (There is always the possibility of user error: I make 'em too..
