P: Make a crop selection then zooming causes view to reposition incorrectly

Community Beginner ,
May 29, 2025 May 29, 2025

I'm using a large image file (11520x23680).

When you make a crop selection and zoom in the view incorrectly jumps to the center.

See attached video.

Steps:

  • Make a crop selection with the crop tool.
  • Hold ctrl-space to get the zoom tool.
  • Drag zoom in.

The view will jump to the center, but it should have stayed where you zoomed in.

Hi @Ellis5C47 Thank you for reaching out and Welcome to the community!

Could you please share some more information about the issue like does this happen with other images too or just this one? If it does happen with other images, what type of images are those (JPG, PNG or DNG)? Also, your system information would be incredibly helpful to get a clearer idea about the issue. From Help> System Info> Copy and just paste it into a text document file and attach it with your response.

While we wait you can try out these fixes. See if they work.

1) Reset the Crop Tool and Zoom Tool: Select the Crop tool. Right-click on its icon in the top options bar (not the toolbar icon). Choose Reset Tool and do the same for the Zoom tool.

2) Reset Photoshop Preferences: You may want to Back them up first before resetting them. Please refer to this Helpx article for steps to back up and reset: Preferences in Photoshop

3) Toggle GPU Settings in Photoshop:

  • Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance...
  • Try Unchecking "Use Graphics Processor": Restart Photoshop and see if the behavior persists. If it's fixed, the issue is GPU-related. Try installing latest the GPU drivers from the manufacturer's website. Studio Drivers are recommended over game-ready ones.

Try these and let us know how it goes.

Cheers!

This seems to happen when "Scrubby Zoom" is checked.

I normally keep that unchecked and haven't had any problems. But checking it I can reproduce.

It happens with PSD, PNG, and JPG files that I've just tried. They don't have to be large in dimensions, happens with smaller files too (just tried it on a 1500x1500 file).

Resetting the tools didn't help.

I tried turning off Scrubby Zoom and this didn't help.

It occurs if you zoom while there is an active crop selection.

Next I will try your #2 and #3 suggestions.

Hi @Ellis5C47, Thank you for trying out the suggested steps. I'm sorry to hear that the provided troubleshooting didn't help. Let's try some more.

1) Try to run Photoshop under a different administrator account and check if it helps. Please refer to this page for more information: Manage User Accounts in Windows - Microsoft Support

2) After that, try running Photoshop under Safe Mode and see if it works as intended. You may refer to this page: Windows Startup Settings - Microsoft Support

Cheers!

Hey @Ellis5C47

I can reproduce the issue you're experiencing and understand what's happening. If you release the mouse click before the keyboard shortcut, the canvas will zoom into the center. However, if you release the keyboard shortcut first, the zoom will stay focused on the area you've selected. Let me know if that is the case with you as well.

It is happening for me whether I release the mouse first or the keyboard keys first. Here's a video clip of me releasing mouse first in the first attempt and then releasing the keys first on the second attempt.

Hi @Ellis5C47

I see the issue when I invoke crop, make a marquee selection, and then use scrubby zoom within that selection.  However, the image does not reposition if I don’t make a marquee selection and just use scrubby zoom. Is this a suitable work around, or is the marquee selection an important step in your workflow?

The crop selection is important. The reason I do this process is to crop to a small specific section of the image. I select the crop tool, select close to where I want to crop, then zoom in to precisely position the top left and bottom right corners of the crop selection. The problem is that when I zoom, it repositions to the center of the image.
