P: Red layer mask overlay - shortcut not working

Hello..

when I'm working on a layer mask, I'm usually able to toggle the red, transparent mask overlay with "<"  (on english keyboards it would be "\")  to see which parts of the mask I'm currently painting on while still being able to see the original image (I'm not referring to Quick Mask Q). This way I don't need to work on the black&white preview of the mask since I wouldn't be able to look at the original image.

Now since the last few updates, I cannot toggle said mask overlay with "<" while working with a simple brush. For this to work I would also need to press "alt" AND click on the layer mask, which is pretty inconvenient for me.

I find this very strange since pressing "<" when using every other tool works just fine - except with the brush ....

Are there any settings I'm missing for this to work!?

OS: Windows 10

Photoshop 23.5.1

There's no new version to download so far this week, but Max is around the corner...

Asking the team to investigate to see what the issue might be.  Thank you,

@CShubert  it didn't help either.

I rather think this issue might have something to do with the compatibily of photoshop with the German keyboard layout. Other people on this forum talked about the same problem and they were all using European keyboards.

I just cannot understand why "<" works on EVERY other tool - except the brush, where it is necessary. I mean it had previously worked just fine...Since last few updates I had to press "Ctrl + <" for it to work. Fine, I adapted.. but now having to press "alt + <" is just frustrating.. specially when this shortcut opens and selects all my folders if I don't have the layer mask selected.

@Joel24955221juob we want to make sure you tried the manual removal of preferences and if that worked for you?

Thank you,
