I just updated Photoshop after having to retrieve the previous version from time machine as Photoshop wasn't updating layers and when it wasn't polluting my files, it was changing the colors in random ways. This time, I'm getting that <name+copy>.tiff. My workaround is the same as the previous one, Time Machine < Photoshop 2019 < Restore. I have to say that these recent experiences are making me seriously consider dumping my subscription altogether. Affinity Photo and Designer look far superior and as soon as someone comes up with a more robust, 21st version of After Effects, That's what I'm going to do.

Well, here's something. If you now have a new file named what the previous version was with "copy" added to it, overwriting that file actually works and doesn't add another "copy" to the name. So if you don't mind having all the files you want to overwrite have the tag Copy, it works as it should. I'm updating files for a 3D modeling project and am constantly changing the texture layers, so I'm just going to make friends with the "copy" suffix until Adobe actually fixes it or I move to Affinity Photo.

Found this today addressing Photoshop and macOS Catalina (10.15) compatibility
at least they are actually acknowledging theres an issue now... still waiting for a fix adobe...

Cannot overwrite an existing file when saving with the same filename

Photoshop saves a copy instead of overwriting an existing file with the same name.

Workarounds

  • Manually rename the saved file and remove 'copy' from the file name.
  • Save the file to a different location.

Note: We are working with Apple to address this issue.

Any update on this, I'm seeing comments form 9 months ago having issues. I'm still having this problem trying to export a png. Brings up prompt to save over the file, but then just makes a second file with copy at the end of it. Really frustrating workflow.

You are right not sure why it worked the first time, issue is still there...

It definitely hasn't always been this way and it is causing me no end of issues. I create personalised artwork for customers. They often request edits which involves me saving over the original jpeg. Ive been working this way for 5 years and since the new update I now have to manually go in to my folder, delete the original and then rename the file with the copy extension. So frustrating and a waste of my time.

This is super annoying and time-consuming.  If Adobe cares about their customers working more efficiently, they need to fix this.  That is...  IF.

Any resolution to this? I agree that Adobe needs a swift smack to the head if this is an intentional 'feature'. Stop trying to out think your customer's work process.

I have also run foul of this by uploading an incorrect file to competition and as part of a qualification panel - this really needs to be fixed now.

I think this is a problem with the new Catalina Mac IOs, because it has started to occur since I upgraded to this version. I also have a PC and in Windows 10 working with the same version of Photoshop this problem does not exist. Adove: fix this problem as soon as possible, it is inadmissible.

Still broken as of today. In Catalina 10.15.6, Photoshop 2020 (V 21.2.1) .. super annoying and a waste of time. Especially the "do you want to replace?" and clicking yes makes a "copy" version. 10 months ago this thread started. Where is the fix Adobe?

WORK AROUND: Working with a PSD layered file today, Aug 21, 2020.

(1) "Save" your PSD file
(2) "Flatten Image" (Layer --> Flatten Image)
(3) "Save As..." and replace the JPG file
(4)  Close

(5) If using one PSD file to generate multiple images, you can "Open Recent >" and repeat, replacing the variation you want.

Still not great, but maybe faster than manually changing names and deleting old files?

Using iMac 27", Mac OS Catalina 10.15.6, Photoshop 2020 (21.2.1)

This is not a good workaround. You stand a dangerous risk of loosing your layered file with this method. Photoshop was working fine before this update and the worst thing is this was never an issue to even require updating. Now I have to continuously delete previous JPEGS & TIFF files just to prevent having multiple copies, WTF Adobe? Also because of this my Indesign files are going haywire not updating to new files because the new files somehow has F'ing "COPY" added to the name so, guess what, NO UPDATING there either. That's it, i'm switching to Affinity. I think photosho's days are done finally 😕

Yup, still nothing.  I wouldn't even consider Photoshop to be Production-ready with such a glaring bug present.  I mean it's not like anyone would ever want to save over an already existing image, right?

Here is a possible workaround for those that save to the same filetype each time..  I always save as png for example.  It's a hassle but as least it doesn't ask you to overwrite the file and then not actually overwrite it.  It also doesn't force you to use the legacy "Save for Web" option.

  • File -> Export -> Export Preferences
  • Select your preferred format in "Quick Export Format" and any other preferences in this panel that make sense for you

Ready to save without the word "Copy" in filename?
  • File -> Export -> Quick Export as <file format you chose>
  • Let the panel load up with your image, then "Export"
  • Set your filename and then "Save". Even if the file already exists it'll still actually overwrite it like one would expect.

What a hassle.  Alternative to going to "File -> Export..." is the <sarcasm> completely intuitive Shift+Option+Command+W "shortcut" instead </sarcasm>

This absolutely needs to get fixed by Adobe ASAP and I can't believe it's been a bug for at least the last 9 months.  Saving over an existing image is probably in every Photoshop user's workflow!

Hoping this hacky way of doing things helps someone.

I'm so happy that I barely use Photoshop anymore. The last updates have been a nightmare, the whole thing with transform, inverting the regular UX of using the alt to resize proportionally but this is another level of **ck up! The amount of time spent deleting copy, or renaming the copy copy copy, not allowing any way to change the saving behaviour, doesn't make sense for a subscription that cost this much! 10 months and nothing.. shameful

If you're attending the Online Adobe Conference October 20–22, 2020 bring up this issue with the Photoshop team/presenter and maybe if enough of us address it they'll pay attention!

I'm having this same issue since recently updating to Catalina and the latest version of CC. Anyone ever see any resolution at all? I don't really have *time* to talk with Adobe tech support, but that's my next move.

Okay, I stumbled onto this about a week ago and it seems to be a cure to this persistent and irritating issue. When you first save a file, if you add "copy" at the end, that fools photoshop into overwriting that file like we want without adding another "copy" to the file. Save a file like this: Name Of Image File copy.jpg and the next time you save over it, photoshop will overwrite it. Be sure to use a lower case "c" or else photoshop won't do it right.
