What are you looking to do? What kind of image manipulation? For professional retouching, I believe Photoshop is the only game in town. The alts exist for other things like color correction, design, etc. And Gimp is an open source photo editor that has existed for a long time.

I've been retouching for the past 25 years or so and I've looked around but Pshop is standard for the field. Although! I admit I use ridiculous retouching and color editing apps for my mobile photos sometimes, for fun. Heh. Maybe some day Pshop will go the way of Quark, which is still alive and kicking somewhere.

@sebastian_aguila

Affinity Photo looks like a great alternative, one I'd use instead of photoshop right now were it not for my dependence on After Effects.

They have an Illustrator alternative too and neither app relies on 30-year-old code.

Adobe, please address this issue. It's not a "feature". It's a bug. Period. Many frustrated users out here. Thank you.

Thanks will take a look, unfortunately I think I have certain dependency on psd files, not sure if these softwares will be able to open them. If they do then I will definitely try them.

Thanks

Not sure if you saved as from a FLAT to a jpg. A Layered file saved as over an existing jpg STILL does NOT work.

The problem isn't isolated to JPGs. It also saves a Copy when saving as a PDF or PNG from the "Save As..." command. It's a systemic problem.

Right, I forgot, the problem is WAY worse than the humble jpg.

@Brad_dismukes

I have Affinity Designer because I try to stay clear of Illustrator for small stuff. I don't work in vector any longer, I used to, now I work in vector for fun or small things so I don't use it much but I enjoy Affinity Designer better than the situation that is Adobe Illustrator. Unfortunately, I'm dependent on Photoshop for photo editing ... for now.

I can give Affinity Photo a shot for personal photos.

This problem has been driving us all crazy for a year now. Clearly, Adobe doesn't care, and clearly, it's totally useless to keep posting here in the hope that they will do something about it. In a non-monopolistic world we would all be looking for a better software to use, but unfortunately, there are no other valid options.
While Adobe takes advantage of the lack of competition, making its customers pay the price, they should also know that they are causing substantial damage to their brand and the credibility and respect that we all used to have for this company. The lack of fixes, or even an acknowledgment of the issue (they don't even recognize it a such) is downright disrespectful.

I've been using their CS for work for more than 20 years, and I'm honestly appalled.
What the heck happened to this brand. They used to be cutting edge.
Now it feels like we're all looking for another player to step in and give us a more effective product.
I wish I would go back to a Pre-Catalina world and reinstall my previous version which worked just fine.

Does anyone know how to begin a class action suit?

Unfortunately, Adobe likely has its ass covered with the legalese all over their agreement pages you are supposed to read before accepting and proceeding to install their software. Though, we might have a case with the idiot support people who claimed this was a "new feature." I've head that and am completely floored.

And now I see that Affinity software no longer opens native INDD files, haven't tried AI and PSD but likely same issue. You have to export all Adobe docs to be able to open in Affinity apps.

So, Adobe has your money, and won't strive to do anything but the most basic of updates to keep their costs down.

The important thing is to expose them, here in these forums, and on Facebook.

Eventually, they might get it. Or become another Quark.

Class action might be the only way to get them moving. They create features that I don't want, change things that have worked perfectly for 30 years to make them nearly unusable and then introduce time wasting bugs like this one that they don't bother fixing.

Why did they even add the "copy" to the file name - I know what I want to name my files - I don't want Adobe stepping in with their ideas (that's a laugh in itself) on how to name my files.

I think that's exactly why it's so infuriating. Thank you for putting it so eloquently.

Photoshop 2018 use to be able to override (Save on top) of an already existing JPEG file.

In the new version (2019, 2020), the extension "-copy" is added despite telling the app to override (Replace) the file.

How can I disable the new "feature" without rolling back my OS to an older version?

note: Before answering anything you believe is relevant, please go through the steps mentioned above to make sure you understand and are familiar with the issue being discussed.

Photoshop 2020 21.2.4

Mac Pro (2019)

macOS Catalina 10.15.7

Thank you.

Just FYI, version 22.0.0 does not fix this bug. If everyone here would take some time to file a bug report and/or post a new forum thread, a few hundred posts about it would be wonderful.

Major bug from 21.x.x still exists in 22.0.0

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Create a document with layers. Use the Save As... command to save as a JPG.
  2. Make changes to document. Click "Save As..." save as JPG using the same name.
  3. OS will ask if overwriting the file. Click "Overwrite."
  4. PS will ask about jpg settings.
  5. File is saved with " copy" appended to name, it does not overwrite file as indicated.
  6. This bug appears anytime a file with layers is being saved without layers. This includes PNG, TIFF, and even PSD files.

This bug breaks dynamic linking. And causes a lot of stress and anxiety.

This bug also has its own bug. If you name your file "Untitled-1 copy.jpg" and attempt to save over it, the file will be overwritten as the program warns. Basically adding " copy" to your filename causes Photoshop to work the way it has worked up until version 21.x.x. This causes a problem for anyone who expect the app to not overwrite files, even when it tells you it will. (Which should be no one, but this is the internet.)

I'm happy to @#$% on Adobe for failing to fix this in PS 22. This is beyond the pale. I've moved to opening all existing jpgs and dragging history over, flattening, and saving to avoid dynamic linking problems and file management issues.

Come ON Adobe. Start earning your exorbitant subscription fees. Give some love to the small but dedicated group of professionals for whom this BUG is a daily headache.

Let me also add that I am saddened that, since PS 21, you can no longer rename a file in the finder for a file that is open in PS, continue to work on, then save that file and have the name automatically update in the open file.

I just updated Photoshop 2021 (v. 22.0.0) on both my Mac at home (Catalina) and my Mac at work (Mojave). On Catalina, problem saving over jpeg still exists. On Mojave, the problem does not exist. I even tested Photoshop 2019 (v. 20.0.10) on both Catalina and Mojave and the results are the same. My conclusion tells me it has a lot to do with Mac OS Catalina.

This is very interesting to me... because Adobe has claimed that it is an issue with Apple/Catalina... yet other apps (including Adobe apps) work as expected... and even Photoshop works as expected when files don't need to be flattened (or " copy" is added to the name.)
