@wayne_heywood I tested PS 21.4.2 on the Big Sur beta a few weeks ago and the problem still existed. I haven't had a chance to try 22.0.0 yet.

Adobe's obviously not paying any attention to this forum.  As a Creative Cloud subscriber, I get a survey on every Adobe app every few weeks.  Every time, in the "what would make you recommend (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, whatever) to others?" field I put "Fix the Photoshop Save As bug!"  Then I check the "OK to contact me" box.

Fix it, Adobe!  It might be caused by a change in Catalina, but it's still your bug!

Wow, this thread is TIRED.

At this point it's pretty clear that Adobe's rental scam isn't resulting in more and more-timely bug fixes, so either dump them and reward a company that respects its users... or don't, and continue to limp along with defective software.

I would argue the issue is with Adobe not testing on the latest OS. Surely Apple is not expected to make sure premium 3rd-party software is bug-free. This is akin to victim blaming. LOL

By the way, not once has Adobe contacted me to ask what bug I'm talking about.

Right. That's why this discussion is in the Adobe forum and not the Apple forum.

Hello.
We are experiencing an issue with the latest version of PhotoShop in 2020 regarding overwrite saving.
For example, when I try to overwrite a file in "png" format, it is duplicated.
This issue has not been fixed for several months.
Is there any way to fix the problem?

I'm Japanese and I'm sorry for my poor English.

OS: macOS Catalina
Model: Mac mini (2018)
Memory: 16 GB RAM
PhotoShop version: 21.2.4

I have the same problem. Mac OS 10.15.7 Photoshop V 22.0.0

Despite saying yes to overwrite existing jpg it still saves a copy. And as everyone has said you then have to navigate to files and delete/rename. It causes issues with potentially sending an old version to clients etc.

One work around I've used (and we shouldn't using work arounds anyway!) make your layered files an artboard. The layers still work the same. Then you can export the artboard as a jpg from the layer palette options instead. When you come back to make changes and export again to jpg, it will save over the previous version. You just have to make sure you name your artboard with the desired file name in the first place (so it's not just 'artboard 1'. Less annoying than renaming files etc.

This is actually the same thing as "Export As..." under the File menu > Export (and no need to create Artboard at all). Someone in the forum already suggested that.

You're right! That works the same and without doing the artboard thing, (I was using artboards at the time which is why it occurred to me). I hadn't seen the other post. It's a shame the thread has got so long as the original problem still isn't fixed. Thanks.

Updated to macOS Catalina 10.15.7 and Photoshop 22.0.0 and the problem persists. Good grief. Will this ever be address, or are we forever trapped in this file renaming hell?

"Quick Export to JPEG" (with keyboard shortcut assigned) is most effective workaround at the moment. See screenshots below:

Set up this "Export Preference" first:

I save as PDF files for certain projects and you can't Export as a PDF unless you work in Artboards, which I do not.

Appreciate the workaround, but we need a fix.

I like this workaround, but I'm not seeing a keyboard shortcut option for "Quick Export as JPEG". Did you have to change a setting? I'm on a Mac.

I used the built in shortcut feature in PS. I made mine control-option-command-S. I like it because it still uses "S" and can be done with one hand.

All these years of using keyboard shortcuts religiously for Photoshop and I never knew you could customize and change them. This is exciting.

While I greatly appreciate everyone's workarounds with regards to this issue, we do not need more band aid fixes posted as a long term solution. The real problem here is ADOBE IS NOT LISTENING TO US. They need to program this change into the next update. Those of us who have been using PS for years are incredibly frustrated that someone at Adobe found this feature unimportant and wrote it out of the software. And now they are trying to tell us to just get over it and move on. So not okay. Adobe, are you reading this? Damn, if I was in San Jose I would come knocking with a huge sign.

@lisa_wandrei Totally agree. This surely can't have been removed intentionally? It's a basic function for any software??

There's still more to say about this defect?

Really?

Fix this!  Just go back to letting save the jpg by overwriting what is there.
