Question

photoshop and lightroom metadata is not writing during export

Windows 10, PC, latest LR and PS.

Edited Nov. 13, for clarity.

Metadata like keywords and creator are in the .DNG files. When I export the DNG's to jpeg and tiff in LR Classic, or Save them in Photoshop 24, the metadata - such as Caption, Creator, Author, keywords, Alt Text - is not ending up in the jpegs and tiffs. So the exported files are missing the metadata.

In LR, I tried turing this off and on, it made no difference.
Edit > Catalog Settings > Metadata, then select Automatically Write Changes Into XMP.

Support did a remote session and confirmed the bug. They have no idea what to do next so they escalated it.

See attached files showing metadata present and missing.

Anyone else having this issue and/or have a solution?

@Kevin Stohlmeyer for added clarity, the metadata I want preserved is not just the camera metadata, it is metadata such as Caption, Creator, Author, keywords, Alt Text.

Yes, I'm using LR to batch convert RAW to .tiff and to .jpeg.

When I want to use a jpeg in social media or web, I use Bridge or Photoshop to add the metadata fields and then I resave the image. I do not want to save a duplicate as that would be a huge and confusing waste of resources.

Where is the "save as" function in Lightroom?

The OP mentioned LR and PS - wondering if they are using LR to convert RAW to TIF.

Yes, agreed, but it isn't possible to export as TIFF from Photoshop, only Save As... So why would the metadata be missing from the TIFF?

Anything using Export - the expected behavior of the Export dialog is to strip out metadata to reduce file size for web usage. That's it's purpose compared to Save As.

@Kevin Stohlmeyer - that too was my first thought, but what about the TIFF?

Hi @GilmourB exporting strips metadata as its primary use is for web graphics. Use Save As instead to maintain your metadata chain.
