PS 2025 Remove tool and generative tool not functioning properly

Community Beginner ,
Oct 24, 2024 Oct 24, 2024

After the 2025 update I cannot remove objects/people from an image, the Ai replaces the item I am trying to remove with a random object (coffee mugs seems favourite). I have tried the remove tool and Generative fill and they both do the same.

I have also been to settings - Image Proccessing and change everything to 'Stable'

I switched back to PS 2024 and it all works fine!

Yes! I get hearts and people generated instead of skin.

Hi @davidh88512897 @careaux,

Thanks for reaching out and for explaining the issues with the Remove Tool and Generative Fill after the 2025 update. To better understand what’s going on, could you please share a screen recording that shows the issue in action, along with the sample image and prompt you used? This will give us a clearer picture of the behavior you’re seeing.

Also, could you grab your System Info from Photoshop’s Help menu, save it in a text file, and upload it here? That information will help us dig into the issue more effectively.

Looking forward to your response so we can assist you further!

Best,

Anshul Saini

Sadly, it's doing the same for me, and I'm in 2024...so frustrating and time consuming to try to figure it out

Yes, this is a problem for me as well.  When I use the 'Remove' tool on an object in my picture, it replaces what I removed with a similar object and generates 3 versions to choose from.  I have turned  'Generative AI' off in the tool bar but it still generates a similar object.  So, I can't remove anything from my image using this tool.  Very frustrating.

it's doing the same thing for me, even when going through the "remove distractions" function.

Hi @FIVESTAR design @Al325488158nhy @michaela38849736,

Thank you for sharing your experience. I can understand how frustrating this issue with the Remove Tool and Generative Fill not working as expected must be.

To assist you further, it would be helpful if you could privately share a screen recording demonstrating the issue, along with your system information (which you can gather from Photoshop’s Help menu) and a sample file. This will allow us to check the issue on our end while keeping everything confidential and safe.

Please feel free to send them to me directly via DM, and we’ll do our best to investigate and resolve this for you.

Looking forward to your response!

Best regards,

Anshul Saini

here's a screen recording. PS 2025, windows. Took me like 10 runs of the remove tool to finally remove it.

I think the issue in the example in the video is that you are not selecting the shadow cast by the object you want removed. If you don't select it, the shadow will be left in the image. And if it is left in the image then something has to be casting it. All those attemps are photoshop trying to create something that would cast that shadow.

Solution: select shadows cast by theobject along with the object you want to remove.

Thank you for this response and suggestion. Since my original post about the tool not working I have found that you are right about the shadow having to be removed as well as the item you are trying to remove. If the shadow is not included in the selection of the item, Ps will generate a new image to replace what you're removing.

I think your observation is correct. I wanted to keep the shadow, as I wanted to replace the object with my own, without having to recreate the shadow, and was hoping that AI would have been developed to understand that scenario.
