A second text box is automatically opening next to the main text box and I cannot edit

Something strange is happening when I try to edit a text box. I draw my text box and a second box is opening to the left filled with the same text. I can edit in that box, but I can't see the changes. I don't know why this is happening or how to turn it off. I am not able to make text edits by directly editing in my text box the way I normally do. This is happening in every file I open.

See the dotted outline of the box to the left - that is what shows up when I try to edit text in the box on the right.

This is what appears when I select the text in the left box. That's the only way to see it.

Any ideas how to fix this? It's driving me crazy as I can edit the text in my files!
