Question

Action step dialog box not applying adjustments

Summary:

When I  toggle the dialog ON for an action step that runs a filter, the filter opens, but doesn’t apply any adjustments to the new layer when I click OK button. With the dialog OFF, it does apply some default adjustments to the new layer, but of course, I need the dialog so I can make my own adjustments.

The Details:

As part of an action that duplicates and resizes an image for printing, I want to run the Nik Output Sharpener filter, which runs in a window where you can adjust sharpening for various parts of the photo. When you’ve made the adjustments, you click OK to close the window and return to the Photoshop layers.

I’ve recorded the command to start the filter (Filter... Nik Collection... Output Sharpener) and placed this action step after steps to resize and duplicate the background layer. However, if I toggle the dialog ON for the sharpening step, no sharpening is applied to the layer. If the dialog is toggled OFF, sharpening is applied. Of course, I want to be able to adjust the sharpening before clicking OK, so the dialog needs to be ON for the sharpening step.

I’ve attached a screen shot of the action steps.

I must be making a fundamental error, because isn't the whole point of showing dialogs is so you can make your adjustments before continuing to the next action step? (Note: the resizing step does work properly. Could it be a problem with the filter?)

Thanks,
Russell

When you recorded the action, did you make any corrections to the NIK filter to get it to register that something was done? Opening the NIK filter with the dialog is most likely just opening a new blank workspace, which is most likely wanted by anyone selecting to show the dialog. Without the dialog box, it defaults to how the filter was recorded and what settings were used.

Good idea, Chuck, and thanks for responding, but the issue persists.

I deleted the NIK action step and re-recorded it, this time changing the sharpening from my default 60% to 70% by dragging a slider. (While recording, the sharpening was applied.) However, when I run the action I get the same result, which is that the new layer is created, but it has no sharpening at all applied to it.

Just to clarify, I do want the dialog, so I can select something other than 60%, or apply NIK control points to remove sharpening from soft clouds, etc.

Chuck,

I made a Keyboard Maestro shortcut that calls the filter. Since it’s the last step in the Action, I’ll just run the action, then hit the shortcut.

Not worth either of us spending much time on this, but thanks for your generous offer to help.
