You need to make sure your system has Japanese support. Then you would type characters using an Input Method Editor. This is complicated because of the tens of thousands of characters in Japanese and the three non-western alphabets (Kanji, Hirigana and Katakana). You can also use special keystrokes. Exactly, you use your keyboard. How do you use your keyboard to type Japanese characters? It's not a trick question, some people don't know how to do this. What you can expect in ANY properly made font from anywhere is that if you just type English letters you will get English letters (or nothing). All Japanese fonts include English as one of the four commonly used alphabets.

You do NOT need to download a font, and free fonts aren't likely to be good quality. Because of the tens of thousands of characters in them, good Japanese fonts can cost thousands of dollars. However, both Adobe software, and the Windows and Mac systems come with excellent quality Japanese fonts ready for use.
This web page has a lot of detail on how to install and set up Japanese language support in Mac and Windows 10, including an IME. https://www.tofugu.com/japanese/how-to-install-japanese-keyboard/

This flaw is now almost 10yrs old. You'd think Adobe would get around to fixing it within our lifetimes.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but based on the previous answer that was called “perfect,” isn’t this about correctly setting the keyboard Input Source at the OS level, and therefore not anything Adobe needs to fix?

Doesn't work. I had a colleague follow the same instructions, didn't work for her either.
