Adobe Photoshop 2023 missing save as jpeg

Hello community! I seem to be having an issue with the brand new version of Photoshop. Up until today with the release of version 24, I was able to save all images as jpegs. After the update, I can no longer save as jpeg. I am saving as RGB with 16 bits per channel like I always have, but for some reason I no longer have the option for jpeg. The options I get are PSD, PSB, CIN, IFF, JPF, PDF, PNG, PBM, and TIF. The images are completely flattened with no additional layers showing open. Any ideas of what could be causing this?

I am having the same problems and it is extremely unhandy since I have large volumes of photos to process and save as jpg. I am attaching screen shots to show my settings.

I agree I have found this really annoying.  I have found sometimes I have had to flattern the image to do this - even though I thought my image was flatterned and the option comes up. Alternatively running the Scripts Image processor has an option to save as a jpeg and determine the degree of compression and whether you want to attach the profile or not.

I tend to have the same issue when I thought the image was flattened but was not, and I have learned to work around that. This is something new that just started happening. It's like they are starting to remove the capability of saving as jpeg.

Hi, Photoshop, until, I think CS5 never allowed to save in a format that does not support all the peculiarities of a file.

Since JPEG is 8 bits, you could not do that. Since BMP does not support layers, you cannot save to that format...

Around CS5 , the team decided to let users shoot themselves in the foot do that destructive operation, and auto-convert to 8 bits, for instance. If you only save to JPEG then close the file, no more layers, or no more 16bits, alpha channels, etc...

But recently, Apple mandated software manufacturers to only give native formats, or formats that support all conditions of a file in Save as. Adobe had to comply, and provide by default only formats that support all the characteristics of a file you are currently working on.

Come to think of it, if you have a word file with an image, you cannot directly save it as a txt file, you need to export it.

The jpeg format does not support 16-bit. Use Save as Copy to save in a format not supported by the one that is currently open. Alternately, you can revert to the previous behavior in Preferences > File Handling > File Saving Options:

    • Enable Legacy Save As
    • Do not append Copy to filename

    Hi Jane,

Thanks for the response. I tried changing to 8 bit, but I still don't get the option to save as jpeg any more. Any other ideas?

Instead of "Save As", does "Save As Copy" work?
