All the tools keep changing to the eraser

I recently got a new XP-pen artist display pro 15.6, and have been using photoshop with it. I've had it for maybe a week, and everything appears to be working fine, however over the last few days of using Photoshop, when I go to use any of the tools in the toolbar, whether it be a brush, the paint bucket, lasso, move tool, ect. they all seem to keep changing into the eraser, and it refuses to let me use any of the tools. I've closed out of the program and gone back in, and while this seemed to help a few times at first, now it won't work. I've reset the eraser tool and all the other tools, and that appeared to fix it, however, it was a short fix as it's back to doing it again. I don't believe it's the tablet that's doing it, as I've turned the eraser function on the pen off. What I also find weird, is I can use the touchpad on my laptop and then everything works as it's supposed too. I'm a digital artist. and normally using the touchpad would be totally fine, but that is not the case, and really inconvenient.

At this point, I'm very frustrated and have tried everything I can think of that might fix it (I'm average with photoshop knowledge) but nothing seems to work. Any help would be much appreciated!

Try updating or rolling back the tablet driver.

You could also try XP-Pen support:

Hi, I ended up reinstalling Photoshop and it seemed to fix the problem, but it happened again...So then I uninstalled and reinstalled the tablet, and it's still doing it. I've reached out to their tech support to see if they know anything.

I'm not convinced either of these suggestions will be helpful, but just in case...

  • It could be the sticky keys function,
if you hold a tool shortcut key down while using it, it switches back to the previous tool when you release it.
For example, you have your eraser tool activated, then you press and hold b (for the brush), you draw and then release the b key, it'll switch back to the eraser.
  • Alternatively, drawing tablet often have a pen/eraser option, or an eraser shortcut asigned to one of the keys, disabling these could help.

I've had something unusual occur recently that sounds similar. Although I haven't worked out what is causes the issue yet, pressing Esc a few times seems to get the tools functioning normally again. I suspect I'm accidentally altering or selecting something while I'm busy painting and switching between different tool shortcuts.

    Best wishes,
    J
