Applying one smart filter to multiple objects (not link)

I downloaded a photoshop mock up a template and I can't figure out how it's done. The document has 5 different shapes and different angles. But has a smart object in the document that is applied to all of them. I know a little about linked smart objects, but these objects are done internally in the document. I want to know how they were able to apply the one smart object to the multiple shapes because I want to add an additional smart object to replace the shape. See below for screenshot and you can download the file to see too. It just looks like the smart object is grouped but I don't know how the groups were able to create the transform for the smart object to fit the shape. Please help!

Hi

If you duplicate a smart object multiple times with Ctrl+J then change the content of any of them, the content of all the duplicates changes.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your response, I understand that, but it is not what I am trying to achieve. See image below. The template currently has 2 smart objects that are being applied to the 5 shapes. I want to know how to create a THIRD smart object and replace it in the one below. I created a 3rd smart object, now I don't know how to apply it to the shape like how they did it. I included the template download link if you'd like to take a look at the file.

Thank you! This explanation is helpful and getting me closer. In that case, how do you apply the new transformation to the smart object copy?

Select Smart Object layer or layer group then press Ctrl/Cmd + T to enter free transform mode.
