The technically correct answer is because the jpeg specification doesn't support layers. Or 16 bit depth, transparency and alpha channels. Hence, Save A Copy.

However, for many years (since version 12 / CS5), Photoshop contained a "hack" that allowed direct save to jpeg from all files regardless of file properties. This was introduced with much bravado as a "user friendly feature" in CS5 (nobody seems to remember that).

Recent operating system changes rendered this "hack" inoperable, and the

@cmkrapf   Nothing is broken. If you prefer the older behaviour which flattened your image whilst saving to jpeg just go to preferences file handling and check 'Enable legacy Save As'.

Next time you post - keep your language civil as your last post breaks the forum rules.

Recent operating system changes rendered this "hack" inoperable, and they had to revert to the original pre-CS5 behavior: if the file didn't satisfy the format specification, you couldn't save to it. You had to make a copy. This caused so much uproar that they had to come up with a new workaround. And they did - under preferences you can now check "Use Legacy Save As".

The [removed by moderator] at Adobe have outdone themselves once again. After years and years of likely thousands requesting it as a feature they finally allowed vertical centering for textboxes in Illustrator...I was wondering how long it would be before I ran into some new [inappropriate language removed by moderator] "feature" that broke decades of standard use.

Are you aware that Apple made a change to their API and Adobe had no choice but to adapt and also that you can change to the old way in Preferences?

"some new "feature" that broke decades of standard use."

Not quite decades. The hack that @D Fosse mentioned in CS5 came out 12 years ago in 2010.

Save A Copy was a solution Adobe introduced because of changes made by Apple in macOS Big Sur.

See here for an in-depth explanation:

https://petapixel.com/2021/05/18/photoshops-save-as-function-has-changed-on-mac-heres-why/

Enable Legacy "Save As" in Photoshop Preferences gives you the old behaviour back.

I'm no Adobe apologist but it seems to me that they went above and beyond to make this specific feature work for everyone given the API changes in macOS Big Sur (and later). What more *could* they have done?
