Question

Auto-aligned layers extremely distorted

I'm doing some focus stacking in Photoshop. I imported 123 raw files, all shot with a tripod, using the instructions provided here: https://creativecloud.adobe.com/cc/discover/article/focus-stacking-in-photoshop?locale=en

When I auto-align the layers, they're extremely distorted (see attached pic). What's going on? I've been able to do this in the past (stacking a much smaller number of images, like 20 or 30) with no problems.

Just tried starting over with the same set of images, and auto-aligning them caused distortion once again, but not in the same way as before.

There's very little detail (contrast) for auto align to latch onto and use.  Are these all of the same subject without moving the tripod?  Did you use Auto or specify a method?

All shots are of the same subject, which was stationary. I used a tripod, and in Photoshop I selected Auto for alignment. I realize large parts of the image lack contrast, but it was a spider, so there were lots of clear lines. For what it's worth, I downloaded a trial of Helicon, and that software had no problem auto-aligning the layers perfectly.
