Beginner: Distorted background after using content-aware move tool

When using photoshop cc 2017, specifically the content-aware move tool, I am left with both a distorted background and moved image (sections of the image are cut off).  I have tried using different selection tools and worked with the adaptation, but nothing seems to help.  I have watched many videos detailing this simple instruction, but after mimicking the narrators every move, I still find myself with the same issue.  Help.

Thanks

You are asking a lot of content aware as the patterns around the area you have moved are not easily repeated. It works best where there is a pattern it can pick up and use (or grass or trees etc)

Instead, for this image, I masked the boy in Select and Mask and moved the masked layer. Then used the patch and clone tools to take him out of the layer below - watching the patterns as I cloned

    I hope that helps you
