Bevel and emboss

Hi

I am trying to add bevel and emboss to a smart object layer (A4 paper template to make the edges look realistic).  However it is not making any changes to it.  The smart object has layer effects and filter effects.  Just wondering if anyone could advise on how I can apply it? Thanks

Anoter reason beside one nentioned by @Trevor.Dennis can be settings for Bevel effect. All effects have settings like blending mode, color and so on... Please post screensot with document window, layers panel and effect tab in Layer Style dialoue visible.

    Do you have enough room for the effect to show?  If you are applying a drop shadow, for instance, to a layer that fills the page, then the drop shadow would bout outside the canvas bounds.  Try adding some canvas size (set to relative, or reduce the size of the layer.

     

    What colour and tonal value is the layer you want to add the bevell and emboss to?  If it is full white, then only the shading can show.  This shows two identical effects but one of full white, and the other a light grey.

    If you are still stuck, try posting a screen shot.
