Question

black and white conversion

I did a black and white conversion in Photoshop but cannot reverse it. I did the switch in Adjustments. When I went to the menu and to adjustments, black and white was grayed out so that the invert choice was not available. Where do I go now?

Thanks,

The adjustments menu (Image>Adjustments) in Photoshop is destructive. The changes are permanent, once they have gone from the limited history panel (which is emptied anyway when you save).

Use adjustment layers instead - they are non destructive so you can go back later and re-adjust them or remove them.

That said, your original raw file is never altered. So for this image you will need to re-export the original image from Lightroom as colour then use adjustment layers in Photoshop.

Thanks Dave,Great lesson. I did invert from the adjustment panel and not
from a layer. Luv learning this stuff!

If you bring a file into PS from LR as a b&w, it's converted to gray scale. The color is gone. You need to go back to LR and import as a color image.

I converted it in PS, not in LR.

Can you show a screen shot? Are you doing this in camera Raw or Photoshop?

Hi Chuck,
I moved a RAW file directly into Photoshop without any edits from LR. I
just needed an image to 'activate' PS so I could explore some of its
features. I tried a B + W conversion and got stuck. Black and White in
Adjustments was grayed out so I couldn't try to Invert.
Thanks,
Richard

A Raw file can't be changed permanently. When you edit it in PS, you then save it as a psd, tiff, jpeg, etc. Can you just bring in a new copy of the Raw file into PS?
