Black and White Photos Saving in Color

I have been using photoshop (version 13.0) to create black and white photos, usually through channels calculations. When I save these photos (either as .jpegs or .psd files) they save back as the original colors, rather than the custom black and whites. When I open them, they are still in color. I had to reinstall photoshop recently as my computer needed to be rebooted from scratch, so I am wondering if I am missing certain settings or color profiles that are preventing my photos from being saved correctly. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you!

CS6 version 13.0 is very buggy and unstable.  Once you install 13.0 you need to install its updates,  On Windows 13.0 will Updated the  version 13.0.1.3 and you also need to install ACR 9.1.1 for CS6.  On a Mac  version 13.0 will update the version 13.0.6.  In any case it should be the same cs6 as you had.  However if you had to re-install your OS and formatted you boot disk you will have have wiped out you CS6 preferences and add-ons.   You will need to re-install you Photoshop add-ons and setup your Preferences.  Hopefully you back all that up before  formatting your disk.

There are two ways using channels to make b/w images from color:

Photoshop Black and White Conversions - Color Channels Tutorial and

Photoshop Black and White Conversions - Color Channels Tutorial Channel Mixer

See if you are missing any steps.  Image > Mode > Grayscale comes to mind after making your adjustments.
