Black background in text

Whether I'm using Photoshop 2019 or 2020, suddenly the background of any text I add is black. It does seem to print with a white background, but that black background makes it nearly impossible to edit the text when the text is also black. (See screenshot. I had to change the text color to something other than black.)text-scrnshot-01-24-20.pngexpand image

Help!

Thanks!

Sorry, lambiloon. Your answer is NOT correct. Whether I make a text box first, or just start typing, I still have a black background.

I went to the Preference tab View. Icould not find anything that let's you select your background.   I don't like the Black background with the gray letting. It's hard to read.  How can this be changed?
