Blending modes: What is the difference between the two "Subtract"?

There are two "Subtract" in the docs of PS:

What is the difference between the two "Subtract" above?

It looks to me only the second option is about applying a straightforward blending mode.

The first option is about the use of blending effects to combine channels within and between images into new images. Using the Apply Image command or the Calculations command.
