Blending Modes with the Clone Stamp Tool

I am trying to understand how the blending modes work with the clone stamp tool. I have a sample image.

When I sample the green and clone over the yellow which is lighter and the dark red with a Darken Blending mode I expected the cloning to only appear on the yellow. As shown. However, selecting a blending mode of Darken for the clone stamp did not seem to do this. Only when I changed the Layer blending mode did this happen. All of my rectangles are on one layer below a blank layer which I am cloning onto.

I don't understand what the Clone Stamp blending mode is doing for me here. I had hoped this would help when cloning up to edges, but it seems not.

If anyone can offer a simple explanation I would be grateful. Thanks

»All of my rectangles are on one layer below a blank layer which I am cloning onto.«

Tools’ Blend Modes work on the pixels in the active Layer (or Channel).

The Layer itself has its own Blend Mode.

So the behaviour seems exactly as expected.

But to make sure: Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible?

The blend modes for tools work on the layers. If I duplicate the layer with the rectangles on, and do the same thing it behaves as I might have expected. The example below shows cloning with 'Darken' onto the yellow and cloning (reversed) with 'Lighten' onto the dark red.

Thanks that was just the nudge I needed to spot what was happening. Thank you.
