Brush settings problem

 I made a brush preset with the letter x. I am making a line of x's. I am doing this by painting one x and holding down shift, then painting another x.  The first x that I type is going off line. (like a jitter)  My brush settings seem to be okay.  (See screenshot.)

Is the brush supposed to be wavy like that if I have all the settings off?  How can I get this brush to stay in line?

Please post screenshots instead of attaching them in the future. 

The Brush Settings Panel provides a preview of the Brush on a wavy line – that’s just a preview.

Thank you.  The first x I paint jumps from the site of the curser.

Never mind what it looks like in the brush panel. What does it do when you paint in a straight line? Here is one of mine, and look how wavy it looks in the settings panel. Yet if I paint in a straight line, a straight line is what I Get:
