Brush sizes

I'm using a windows pc and would like to know how you can change the thickness of brushstrokes using the keyboard. I read that it should work using the square brackets but this doesn't seem to work.

You can check under 

Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts

if the shortcut is the default or change it to an available key.

Hi try to reset Photoshop Preferences then all will be ok as default....regards

Another possible problem can be input language or keyboard. Ensure that you are using proper keyboard/language option.
